Min - Chi ( chi goes for playoffs )

Post#1 » by scottyg » Wed Sep 11, 2019 3:07 am

Bulls get - Robert Covington

Why? They transform their team into a super diverse deep team and make a playoff push and a player signed to a team friendly deal

Min gets - Denzel Valentine + Kris Dunn + Chandler Hutchison + 2019 top 7 protected 1st rd pick
( unprotected in 2020 )

Why? They gain assets and bunch of young players to
Fit the timeline better than Covington

I doubt any of those guys would get minutes unless its in the gleague. So, I think the wolves could do better if they put him on the market.

Pass for the wolves. You're going for the playoffs so you are expecting your best asset to be a non-lotto 1st. None of the other players matter.

Covington is a key player in Minn, who both leads the defense and enables a varirty of lineups. Its going to take a much better lead asset to pry him loose.

Doesn't really make sense. IMO Minny needs a solid long-term starter closer to Towns age to consider trading Covington and a protected 1st isn't likely to be that (and the rest is just filler).

Of course Chicago really doesn't need a Covington-quality guy - they just need a backup SF which should be available far cheaper then trying for Covington.

Just offer 1for 1 and give them back Lavine who can be a scoring champ and maybe Wiggins resurrect his career.
Min doesnt seem to have good quality playmakers so he can be their lead guard and develop while Bulls have cheap knockoff version of PG & Kawhi.
Lamelo will be a future superstar Bull. Book it. Lavar for president!

More interesting to me would be:

Coby White, Felicio for Roco, Layman, 2020 MIN 1st top 10 prot

I'd pass for the wolves. White is a decent prospect that's a significant overpay by the wolves.

Ya, a protected FRP and D-League guys isn't going to get you RoCo.

Also, where does RoCo even fit w/ CHI? Seems they are set 2-5 w/ LaVine / Porter / Lauri / Carter Jr. Does it make sense for CHI to move a bunch of assets for RoCo when they have Porter already? I don't see it.

I guess the idea would be playing LaVine more at point?

The idea would be he would be the super 6th man that can play the 2,3,4 and then Coby white would be the next playing off the bench followed by Gafford, he would have the same minutes played as the starters !!

Dunn isn’t a bad option for Minny but he just doesn’t really have value. I could see an end of bench guy and a 2nd

I would love Roco on the Bulls. I just dont see them trading a pick with that light of protections for him. I am hoping the Bulls stay healthy and are better this year, but they could easily get hit by the injury bug that has been plaguing them the last couple of years and have a pick in the 5-10 range again this year. Teams in the middle of a rebuilding process should not be trading potential mid-lottery picks for 28.5 year old role players. Perhaps Covington is worthy of a pick in the 10-ish range to a contending team, but I think the Bulls need to show that this team is any good before they consider trading a top 7 protected first.

Layman's more the right quality Chicago should look for. They've got Thad Young as a high-level backup PF already and a bunch of guard to cover SG depth.

I don't see Minny as a good target though. They're weak/thin at forward themselves, while they've got a solid backup PG in Napier.

Chicago might have fumbled free agency a bit.

Otto Porter, Zach LaVine, Cristiano Felicio, Kris Dunn, Coby White, Lauri Markkanen, Wendell Carter Jr., Denzel Valentine,
Ryan Arcidiacono, Chandler Hutchison, Shaquille Harrison, Daniel Gafford

were already with Chicago when free agency started.

Thaddeus Young and Tomas Satoransky were signed using cap space and Luke Kornet ( 2,195,122 and 2,304,878 ) was probably signed using a portion of the room exception.

Minnesota has Layman for three seasons ( 3,581,986 | 3,761,085 | 3,940,185) for a total of $11.3 million.

Alternate paths could have been

* Offering the full room exception for two years to Layman and offering Kornet or another center the veteran minimum

* Offering cash or a second to dump Dunn and signing Layman into the vacated cap space.

Maybe there were some other moves that the Bulls FO could have done to fit Layman in, but being aggressive doesn't seem to be their way of running a team.
