Why did USA play Harrison Barnes as their center against Gobert for so long?

Everyone got put in the dumpster. Turner was even worse. Gobert was simply the best player on the floor.

That's what is likely to happen when you send your 6th best team (if we are generous). Sure, there is still plenty of talent on it, but the core players of teams like France have played together for years and have a massive advantage in terms of team cohesion and understanding.

Coaching staff made a lot of bad decisions. This team still had enough talent to get into the finals but something just wasn't clicking. Having only 1 true playmaker on the team was also risky as hell.

Also Americans not being used to FIBA style of rules or defense, made life harder for them. But like i said, their tactics and poor sub patterns are mostly the reason why they lost. Barnes playing hero ball and messing up everything ( just like in Dallas ), having small guys guarding Gobert also didn't make any sense. Kemba playing bad and no real replacement for him, etc.

To be honest, most if not all of the USA team would not be there if the star players actually decided to play.

FIBA is always gonna get the JV squad. Not an excuse though. Even the D team should be good enough for Gold.

Superstars show up for the Olympics.

Rudy Gobert
Evan Fournier
Frank Ntilikina

Also, we can blame AAU basketball for the embarrassing development of American centers, the US has no all-star level centers. Every top level center today plays for another national team. Rudy Gobert looked like David Robinson playing against middle schoolers out there.

Does that mean we are out of the Olympics?

usa doesn't need superstars to win, just a balanced roster, good coaching and play their average level. They hadn't that against france.

I imagine the coaching staff should shoulder most of the blame, since they also decide who to call-up. Are you telling my they couldn't find any decent bigs besides Myles Turner? Lopez and Plumlee?

What about someone like Drummond or Jarret Allen? Basically any decent mobile big.

Anway the USA should not be losing with the difference in talent levels. It's also a matter of coaching and convincing the players to play as a team.
