OT: 18 year anniversary of 9/11. Where were you?

I was at home watching CNN after the first plane struck. Saw the 2nd plane live hitting the building. We were trying to get hold of an aunt of mine, who was working in one of the buildings. Good thing she doesn’t have work that day.

It was just another 8th grade school day. Then the teachers turned on the TVs and we watched the news all day. I remember at lunch everyone was speculating whether there would be a draft.

Not meant to disrespect the victims from 2001 at all(quite the opposite actually), but we should also take some time to think about 9/11/1973 when Richard Nixon and the CIA prepared and helped carry out the Chilean coup, that basically killed and replaced an elected socialist government with the junta of Augusto Pinochet. The estimated casualties of this coup are estimated to be up to 5000 for just the first few month and suffering and death continued under his reign for the next 17 years.

If we would actually pay tribute to all the casualties that are direct results from western, lets call it by its name, terrorism, we would have a day like this in every month and plenty more.

I'm saying this, because those deaths on 9/11 those are maybe the ones we saw, were we couldn't look away, but they weren't uncalled for. Conspiracy theories aside those deaths were direct result of our aggression and if we take our mourning serious we better are aware and stand against the terrorists among us, those in suits and shiny uniforms, with the drones and carriers.

I know this is pretty rich coming from a German, but you can be sure I'll do what is in my power to stop what happened 3 generations ago, from happening tomorrow.

Everything happens for a reason and those people that were victimized yesterday killed without being guilty, they payed a high price to make us act today.

The people that died on 9-11 had nothing to do with the 1973 CIA coup in Chile.

The is absolutely no justification for the murder of these innocent civilians.

12th grade in my work experience class. Someone came into class and told the teacher what was happening, but the teacher insisted that we just sit in silence for an hour instead of watching this incredible event. I should of got up and smacked that teacher.

I was in my college dorm room waking up and my roommate said to me "Dude, you won't believe this but some idiot pilot just crashed a plane into the world trade center."

So I'm up now watching the coverage of it, baffled as to how something like this could have happened.

a few minutes later, we watch in real time as the 2nd plane hits the other tower.

I said "Paul...that was just done on purpose."

From our location we actually could see the smoke filling the sky as New York City wasn't that far from where we were in Jersey.

That was a really long day. My father was actually on a flight to Georgia out of Newark at that time when the attack happened. He got lucky that his plane wasn't one of the ones that was hijacked. Phone lines were all **** ed to hell in New Jersey at the time, but got a call from my mom around 1pm telling me that he was alright, his plane got grounded in North Carolina.

After classes got cancelled, because you wouldn't believe how many kids on the campus had parents who worked in NY (and several kids in my class lost loved ones), I think I smoked myself into a weed coma because I couldn't get over the fact that I watched people just get killed in real time.

I won't get into what happened the rest of that day because some of it is pretty inappropriate to talk about in a 9-11 thread, but that day the world changed. Things were never the same after that. The people on here who don't remember that day or were born after that day don't realize it but that was a complete paradigm shift. It was jarring.

Nothing was more unnerving than the day or so afterwards when the flight ban was lifted and you heard a plane in the sky for the first time since the attack.

Senior year of high school. Was walking down the hall and noticed a few students in the library watching the news of the first plane crashing into one of the towers....went inside to check out what was going on and 2 min later saw the second plane crash in the other tower. It was surreal. Ran to my class and told them some crazy **** is going on and everyone needs to come to the library asap.

I was in college. I actually went to my early morning class that day and heard on the way in that a plane had struck the WTC but people thought it was an accident. After that class, we learned that a second plane was hit. I then went to my next class and afterwards we heard about the plane at the Pentagon and the school closed for the rest of the day. Spent the next 15 hours watching TV. I remember the phone lines were jammed that day and it took forever for everyone to get through to their parents to let them we were fine (even though we were 100 miles away).

haha we're around the same age then, dude yeah you definitely had an early morning class, i watched the 2nd plane hit and then afterwards I showered and got dressed, left for class. i was walking to my 10:15 biology class (**** I hated that class) and one of the girls in the class told me to turn around, all classes were cancelled. Had no clue if my father was dead or not.

I went back to my room and started rolling up blunts.

Recovering from shoulder surgery. Basketball injury ironically. Was in bed with GF. Already out of uni by then. I had said Bush would have us in a war in middle east in first year, through elections. Didn't think it would start that way though.

Was at work.. One of the bosses printed out an image of a plane hitting a WTC and left it on a table in a lunch room. At the beginning everyone thought its just a photoshop or something like that.
Only when I got home and switched on a tv I realised what happened.

I was in the (Finnish) military air force, basically everyone else from my company was outdoors on a training camp for several days but I was sick (or something like that, enough to miss the first couple of days of the camp ) so I was left behind in the barracks and just spending time. I went to my canteen and saw TV news in sign language showing WTC being hit and towers going down etc. It felt a bit surreal, but I spent the next few hours watching news.
edit: I recall walking back to barracks and some random guy saying to me "dude, everything is alright"...

This being before smart phones, my squad in the forest was kind of "out of the loop" so I brought them a morning newspaper basically saying "WAR" in massive letters when I joined them the next day.

Being Australian it was about 10pm here when the first plane crashed. It was thought to be just a terrible accident and didn’t think much of it at the time. But when I woke up it was crazy.

Just the most crazy world event of my lifetime for all the wrong reasons. Even here in Australia coverage of 9/11 ran pretty much all day on our TV channels for like a week solid (from memory).

I was getting ready for Gym/PE. Which was my first period class my freshman year in high school. The gym teacher told us what happened and not long after that our Principal suspended classes for the day and everyone went home.

I was in my freshman year of Biology 101 taking a pop quiz. Our instructor kept looking at his computer screen in amazement. He said a plane crashed into a building but didn't give us any details. It wasn't until I got back to the dorm later that day that I realized how serious of a situation it was. It was a horrible tragedy, but I was proud of the way everyone in the United States came together as a country to help one another.

Driving down my driveway, my mom just stomped on the brakes and gasped. She told me what happened and had no clue what the World Trade Center was. Remember going to school that day (6th grade) and all day all my classes all we did was watch the news.

A sophomore in college between morning classes in the student center. Of course everyone was glued to the big screen. I was hoping the whole day I wouldn’t see a live explosion on television during the initial rescue attempts and aftermath. My heart goes out to anyone who’s lost someone due to something so senseless as a terrorist attack, foreign or domestic. I can’t imagine the anger.
