Sato wins MIP or Lauri wins MVP: what's more likely?

Not a chance. His ceiling is probably All-NBA 3rd team and that's with a lot more improvement than is reasonable to expect.

He definitely has potential to be an all star if he stays healthy and if he’s able to physically endure an 82 game plus playoff season. A lot of times just talent isn’t enough. MVP though idk that’s taking it too far right now, one step at a time. Let’s see if he takes that next step first

Even an optimist would have to say it's unlikely. Still, I don't think the idea warrants a dismissive NFW. The kid's gifted.

Certainly this upcoming season Sato has a clear advantage of being named Most Improved Player. If Sato has that kind of breakout season it will only help Markkanen to reach his full potential.

No doubt in my mind he will be better than peak Derrick Rose. MVP? well that depends largely on team success so we'll see.

No doubt in my mind Lauri will never achieve Rose's 2011 MVP level,he has the skills for growing into a very good player but talking about MVP for him is kind of dreaming.

I will say this, this year's team will give him his best chance to excel. If he doesn't take a big step forward, I would think hard about trying to use him as a trade chip.

I don't know if it should be dismissed, but there are probably 25-30 people who haven't won the award yet that are more likely to make the leap and a ton of guys who have wont hat would be more likely to win again. It'd go away against the odds for it to happen.

No dominant athleticism no dominant skill and doesn't play a position of dominant value in today's NBA. So many things would have to radically change. Saying he's a future all-star would be a massive improvement, and it's a huge way to go from there to MVP.

Incredibly unlikely and certainly improbable. I’d bet most things on it not happening with a much more likely peak of finishing top 5 a la Noah. However, for a glass half full best case scenario, with the right defensive team around him a la Rose; if he could max his offensive abilities and throw up a 28-11-4 type season on 50-40-90 shooting splits, you’d have to imagine it could give him a legit shot as anyone. Now that’s a super tough ask and he has miles and miles to go to even think about getting there, but shoot crazier things have happened in the league.

More interesting is where he and others will be one year down the road relative to now. Taking the faulty sports illustrated top 100 rankings and looking to oct 2020 and then oct 2021 this is my wild guess ...

Otto 57 —> 57 —> 57
Thad 70 —> 85 —> 99
Lauri 75 —> 50 —> 45
Zach 90 —> 48 —> 48

My strong sense is that the incoming talent gets markedly better over time; the best players by and large train better to stay peak (and healthy) longer; etc For a player to stay the same is to fall in these rankings.

I agree that LM has little or no shot at MVP. I think he could have 2-4 years as top 30.

Don't disagree with any of what you said. You could have also added that MVPs almost always come from teams that are serious contenders and that doesn't look likely in the foreseeable future. What can I say? I hate ishing on other people's dreams.

You cannot speak definitively about Lauri's chances at winning an MVP. There is always 1% chance he can win it.

I won't say, "no way" or anything like that but I find it highly unlikely.

Agreed I would have given Steve Nash a 0% chance. That being said I don’t think Lauri will ever pull off what Nash did.

Neither

Lauri is only extremely good at 3 point shooting. He’s mediocre at everything else and what makes him special is that the one thing he’s good at he just happens to be a seven footer.

Until he shows something else besides 3point shooting such as a midrange game that he goes to consistently, then MVP talks shouldn’t be even in the question
