Some substantive nuts and bolts basketball talk from the NBC Wizards team (Miller, Hughes, and Patsos):

https://art19.com/shows/699721b3-e735-466d-ba23-f02d0d6b6893/episodes/ccc2974e-1a10-45b7-affb-785363866e31/embed?theme=light-blue#

A bit of the party line, but wide-ranging and addresses many of the biggest questions among the Wizards faithful. Miller is bearish on Isaiah Thomas, but I couldn't tell if that was based on anything he has seen this summer or just a general sense. Also, though not really behind the scenes scoop, some pretty decent insight into the issues around keeping Bradley happy.

Apparently, whatever team Justin Robinson is on is winning the pick up games this Summer. That's good news.

payitforward wrote:Yeah, I also disliked the move to acquire Miles. Why not just cut Howard & sign a younger player for @ $3m? The salary hit would have been the same. Layman was the obvious target.

But... maybe Layman wasn't actually available to us? & we'd just added 7 guys & re-inked Bryant. Average age of those 8 guys: 21 years old. I can see why Tommy hit on C.J. Miles. I still don't love the deal. But, he'll be here & gone in a blink. Plus... maybe someone will give us a R2 pick for him at the deadline?

This points up the key fact about the off season: we had nothing to work with! Our only asset was the #9 pick. & some $$ to trade for a R2 pick. We had no trade assets. We didn't have a ton of cap room to spend on established players. Basically, we had nothing -- plus a negative (Howard). & we used that "nothing + a negative" to acquire 8 players: Robinson, Matthews, Booth, Bonga, Jones, Wagner, Bertans & Miles.

In that sense, I guess how good the off season looks in retrospect will come down to how many of the 6 young guys on that list develop into good NBA players. E.g. if there are 4 NBA players among them, it'll look like a triumph! Even 3 would be amazing.

I don't think we missed out on anything by not getting Layman. His shooting last season - 64.6% on 2's - isn't sustainable for him. He was a frustratingly average player at MD, and he was horrific in limited minutes in his 1st 2 season in the NBA. It was Small Sample Size theatre, but still... he had over 400 minutes and was arguably the worst player in the NBA in that time frame.

He was horrific his first season, & he was well below average (i.e. bad not horrific) his 2d season.

His 3d season he did get a lot better -- 3 pt. % improved, rebounding improved, & 2-point % really jumped as you point out. Plus, those numbers were on way more minutes. Plus they would still have been good overall, even if he'd been 10% lower on his 2pt %.

Still, I wouldn't want to make any big claims for him. Just a question of how much value Miles has, being an expiring player & old. Clearly, Layman's a more valuable asset to own than Miles. Though... if we somehow trade Miles at the deadline for a reasonably high R2 pick, the assessment might have to change.

&, again, we have no idea whether Layman was available to us!

You'd think there'd be an official schedule available, so that it'd be easy to find out when TC starts. But... google gives me nothing.

Last year it was on the 29th.

Wall’s supermax is now only going to be 34% of the cap in 2022 if the projections are correct and the salary cap hits $125 million that year (as per the wiretap article).

Even with that contract on the books, the Wizards might have some decent cap room available to go shopping during the 2021 summer free-agent market.

He's a pass dependent player in a pick-up ball atmosphere. The payers who look good in SL are those who can make their own offense. Tough to evaluate Admiral in that setting. Really Kwame Brown, Glen Rice Jr, and Kelly OUbre should tell us that SummerLeague tells us very little.

OTOH, it's great that Rui looked good in Summer League.

Not only that, but with the cap going up so quickly, there's going to be some monstrous contracts given to second-tier stars. If Terry Rozier got $20M a year this summer, what are Jaylen Brown, Danillo Gallinari, Pascal Siakam, Andre Drummond and Buddy Hield going to get next year? 25% of the cap in 2020 will be $29M a year. 30% of the cap will be $35M.

Wall's contract is not going to seem so large next year, and it will seem smaller still in 2021.

What I’ve been saying for a while. The billion dollar sale of the Nets will raise the water level. And we haven’t even tapped into any official gambling money yet.

My concern with Schofield from SL was his defense. You never have to worry about his effort level, focus or anything like that but I’m not sure he’s gonna be quick enough to guard starting-level perimeter players, nor does he have the size to defend bigs. If he gets into real NBA shape - ie drop the popcorn muscles and slims down - it might improve his quickness but who knows.

That said , Admiral was a pretty resourceful spot-up shooter in college (over 40%+ 3pt) and this seasons roster clearly prioritizes shooting over defense. So I think there’s a real opportunity for him to earn backup minutes at the 2-3 if he can thrive in a low usage catch-and-shoot role.

Fortunately, none of these guys has any chance to be anything like Glen Rice. :)

OTOH, now that you bring him up, I wonder what has become of that poor, self-destructive fool....

I'm convinced they could have carried Wall/Porter/Beal's deals on the books. The cap was always going to go up again, it was moreso Mahinmi's contract that handcuffed this team on doing anything.
