I for one am glad this is happening. It's easy for the NBA to score social justice brownie points by having players and the league come out against Trump, we all know they are not going to say anything else on this because being socially conscious here will cost them actual dollars and just like any other corporation that's all they care about.

Option could be the league asks Morey to step down from his position and will ask another team to sign him. Morey is to connected in the league to really be blackballed so it just takes the right owner to pick him up. Would draw attention and controversy but Houston with a new GM can rebuild its connection to China if that’s what they really want to do.

It’s not like Harden or Westbrook can do anything they are locked in on lengthy contracts.

They can afford their players taking a stand vs. Trump because their target audience consists mostly of urbanites who don't support Trump. That's as opposed to the NFL, who have a fanbase that (in comparison) is whiter and more rural.

The NBA is just like any corporate enterprise that looks at the Chinese market, with 1.4 billion people with burgeoning wallets/purses, and sees a huge money making opportunity. That's nothing new.

That's a Dolan move

The owner said that there was such a huge backlash that he was forced to respond publicly. He also said that he thinks Morey is the best GM in the league and that they have no problems with him.

I think it was an appropriate response.

China is a huge market for the NBA.
Interesting to see how they'll handle this with so much at stake

I support HK's fight for sovereignty but this is why business and politics don't mix.

Just remember that on an even larger scale, the US has always been in bed with the Saudi regime. The Saudi regime runs a system that basically makes them a version of ISIS that successfully "made it". Yet the US has been more than willing to shove aside their moral standards to be in bed with those characters. Gotta secure those oil resources.

Everyone has a price and is willing to sell out their moral high ground (if they really ever had any to begin with).

China does have a cadre of young professionals quietly angling for changes in their government. These are lawyers, entrepreneurs, artists, etc. But nothing seems to change.

If MSM is your only source for information on foreign affairs then you probably are getting a distorted view of the situation.

Darrly Morey should have known better. Very unprofessional move. When you become a public face of an organization, your words matter and they effect others around you.

Kanter's situation with Turkey/Erdogan is pretty much inconsequential to the NBA. Having/not having Turkish viewership/fandom does little to impact their bottom line. The same can't be said for China. Silver has more to think about here.

Well that all depends on who/what you speak of, doesn't it?

I'm sure Morey speaking out about something like Boko Haram probably wouldn't have been considered "unprofessional" or anything like that. Probably because it's not something that would effect the bottom line. He'd probably be praised for speaking up.

But of course when he speaks about something that involves an entity with 1.4 billion people with burgeoning wallets/purses who might consider watching the NBA, well now it becomes "unprofessional" and he should've known better. Strange the way that always works.

Yeah. This is a consequence of the globalization of the NBA. Things become complicated in a hurry. I wouldn't want to be in Silver's shoes right now. He's a passive commissioner so I don't expect him to take much if any action. Tough spot to be in, but in this case doing nothing might actually be the right move.

Other than issuing a fine, what else does Adam Silver know how to do?
