Re: Chinese Basketball Association announce that they will cut off all cooperation with the Houston Rockets
Sad thing is that if every company just stood up for themselves, they'd be fine. There's no way the Communist Party could maintain simultaneous boycotts campaign against thousands of companies who happened to mention Chinese human rights abuses or breaches of treaties, or include accurate geographic information. But as long as each one gives in one by one, the bullying works.
And the situation is different with Saudi Arabia. Even if the country may act just as badly in its own back yard, Saudi Arabia doesn't make it an official policy to threaten and abuse companies and individuals in the US, and giving in isn't rewarding such a policy.

Well if North Korea had enough money, they apparently could get any team they wanted to play there and say whatever they wanted them to because the NBA is whore who's completely forgotten where they started and the values of the country that made them so rich in the first place.ShazamDaShiznt wrote:hmmm, if north korea were richer and had a legit basketball team I bet rockets would play some preseason games there

No, the People' Republic of China isnt the real reason why HK is literally setting itself on fire. Sure the PRC would love if HK morphs into another good little mainland city where people just stfu and keep their heads down for fear of the secret police, but HK has been managed in a super duper hands off manner, in comparison to most authoritarian nations, so blaming the PRC in totality is just wrong, there' a shitton of blame and most of it doesnt fall on them.
PRC kept their noses (for the most part, but not completely) out of local HK government cuz they wanted to use the place as a lightning rod to attract foreign investment and to be used as a way to dodge tariffs nations would levy upon China. This is GREAT for HK as they get to be treated special and get WAAAAY more rights in comparison to other mainland cities. It's called the "One Country, Two Systems" arrangement. It's hard to explain so im gonna use an example using the US and Los Angeles. It wont be perfect but itll get the general gist through.
never protestors go overboard. Many Americans working/living in LA are assaulted in the streets and being threatened by the crazed Los Angeleno locals. Talking with a non local accent or speaking positively of the US government can get your ass kicked.
The US government cant send in troops to crackdown, due to not wanting to be called all sorts of mean names and other nations like say China, Russia, etc threatening to launch sanctions (empty threats but still annoying as hell and need to be factored in). Many nations are still butthurt at how strong the US is and constantly denigrate her as a warmonger, who doesnt give a crap about its citizens.
China didn't do "One Country, Two Systems" because of their magnanimous feelings towards the residents of Hong Kong after the UK returned to it. They did it because of the agreement with the UK that stated.
"In accordance with the "One country, two systems" principle agreed between the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China, the socialist system of the People's Republic of China would not be practised in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and Hong Kong's previous capitalist system and its way of life would remain unchanged for a period of 50 years. This would have left Hong Kong unchanged until 2047."
So to say that the PRC has no blame and the rioters are misdirecting their anger towards the wrong source is a pretty inaccurate assessment of the situation. China has been trying to speed up their control of Hong Kong which they had previously agreed to not doing anything to until 50 years after it was returned from the UK to Chinese control.

Yes, that's freedom of speech. Police shooting you would be an abuse of power however.
Morey's statement is an act of free speech. The Chinese overreaction is not related to Morey's freedom to express his views.
Freedom of speech is only about expression. It does not guarantee a lack of consequences. If you made terrorist threats here on the internet, that would still be freedom of speech. However, you'll get a visit from law enforcement soon.

Morey is finished in the NBA. You think the average NBA fan cares about whats happening in Hong Kong? They wouldn't even be able to point to where it is on a map.
Look at what happened with the NFL blackballing Kaepernick. He tried to highlight the US's systemic human rights abuse of blacks, garnered major support from many Americans and fellow athletes, got a Nike contract, and he's still blacklisted in the NFL.

The league only pretends to be progressive when it benefits them. Pathetic.
I bet Lebron won’t say **** either, but he’ll damn sure have something to say if it’s about black lives matter or trump.

No one is censoring Morey and his views. Others have a right to react to your free expression of speech.

Freedom of speech DOES guarantee lack off consequences, actually, that's the whole point... but only from the US government, because the first Amendmment right is ONLY about what the US government can do to you.
Making terrorist threats is not protected free speech, so it's not a good example.

You might be right, but I think Daryl is much better at his job than Kap. This whole situation puts the NBA in a tough spot. The NBA loves to act like they are very progressive ( the Charlotte transgender saga). Let's see how they do here.

So its OK for Saudi Arabia to go killing dissenters in foreign countries as long as its not in the US?

Because it's about the almighty dollar. Freedom of speech does not come without consequence.
This is why I've never condoned athletes bringing politics into sports, into their employer's domain. The NBA got all cutesy with other moral highgrounds so something like this was inevitable imo.
I find it funny that they were ok playing with smoke before but now don't want anything to do with the flames.

Seems many Americans dont underatand the free speech protections provided by the Constitution. Very sad that there isnt more of a focus on it in our educational system.

Why fault a guy for not expressing an opinion for which he has little knowledge of? Meanwhile, there's real problems here in the US with human rights abuses committed against people of color, and Trump acting in pseudo-dictator fashion blackmailing foreign leaders for his own personal benefit.

Locked for obvious reasons. I encourage everyone to read through The New and Improved General Board Policy again, political discussion is not allowed on the General Board.

There in lies the heart of the matter, the fact that you can type those words (most of which I agree with btw) without fear of facing imprisonment. This is not a perfect country, far from it, but we have the ability to speak out and effect change if enough people want it. They have no such freedoms in China, and if the people the are too scared to do anything about it then so be it. I will not however support an American based company applying those values to an American citizen through legalized extortion. If the NBA wants to do business with China, great as that's well within their rights. When they start forcing employees, who aren't citizens of China, to behave as tho they are without their personal liberties, that's a problem. Open and shut case, and quite frankly I hope Morey sues the every living hell outta Fertitta and the NBA for wrongful termination.Nyphantom wrote:ocelot17 wrote:The league only pretends to be progressive when it benefits them.
