Recap: Cardinals Score 10 In First, Advance To NLCS

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Oct 10, 2019 1:25 am

The St. Louis Cardinals scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a Game 5 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

The offensive output was the biggest opening inning in Major League postseason history.

St. Louis teed off on Mike Foltynewicz, tagging him for seven runs, six earned, in a third of an inning. Over his 23 pitches, Foltynewicz allowed three hits and walked a trio. Freddie Freeman made an error in the inning that might have limited the damage and kept the Braves within striking distance.

The damage continued with Max Fried and Luke Jackson on the mound. Fried allowed four runs over 1 2/3 innings. Jackson allowed two runs, one earned, in his 2/3 of an inning.

The Cardinals scored 13 runs without a single home run, peppering the Braves with hit after hit. They went 8-for-17 with runners in scoring position. The hitting went up-and-down the lineup with eight different players recording an RBI and no one registering more than two.

Jack Flaherty provided a steady presence on the mound, striking out 8 and scattering four hits over six innings.

The Braves have lost 10 straight postseason series.
