ESPN finally full HD?

Watching the Bulls / Pelicans game on ESPN right now.
Game looks much sharper. Looks more like 1080I/p. Did ESPN stop board casting games in 720p?

That's crazy if true, since TV makers have been pushing 4k so hard for many years. Yet, barely any channels have upgraded their **** to 1080P.

No, well.. some stuff might be? The Miami-VT game over the weekend looked like it was in 360p so who knows.

Yeah, I honestly am perfectly fine with 720 off an internet stream.

As far as I know sports have used 720p because they can broadcast at higher frame rates. Also I think Comcast only delivers at 720p. Not sure about other cable companies. It won't matter what ESPN wants if the cable company won't deliver it.

I think over the air broadcasts are 1080i. May not be enough bandwidth to broadcast higher.

Internet streaming/downloads is a different matter.

sometimes it's not ESPN, but your tv provider too. I know almost nothing is 4k, but tonight the NFL game on DTV is in 4k. I'll tune in and check it out.

Overall directv's sports games no matter the channel are top notch, at least 1080p. Look great on any 4k led tv. Even the cheaper vizio in my basement. HDR and 4k aren't really as stand out with live TV as it is for movies and stuff.

There is a new 4k 120 fps standard but it is not obligatory and needs a new antenna. I don't know when it will be taken by cable channels.

ATSC 3.0 trials have just begun.

But there are all kinds of obstacles to adoption. For one, it's an optional standard, not one that people had to adopt like the HD transition when people had to get new HDTVs or get converters which received HDTV signals and played them on old TVs.

For another, stations may not have the money to upgrade their transmitters and other equipment. One promise of ATSC 3.0 is targeted advertising but would require people to connect their ATSC 3.0 tuners to the Internet so that their watching habits could be tracked and then they can send you targeted ads.

But the biggest obstacle is that the sports leagues may not agree to broadcasting games in 4K. They may want extra money for instance.

The NFL has attendance problems, partly because people have large HDTVs with their own food instead of overpriced stadium food and they have their devices to check their FF stats. So new stadiums put in things like strong wifi networks to lure fans into stadiums on game day.

They are broadcasting upconverted 4K games on TNF now, on Fox. They may be testing to see if it's successful and if the other networks will pay more to broadcast in 4K.

As for the NBA, cable systems are starting to broadcast some limited programming in 4K. For instance, they will have some 4K content for the Olympics next year but it may not be live.

Bulk of NBA games though are broadcast on regional sports networks. They may not have the money to broadcast in 4K.

I don't know, if some tech company gets streaming rights and decide to stream in 4K, maybe it will happen.

But may have to wait until the next TV deals for the NFL and NBA.

To upgrade huge network of cables to be capable of sending such signals is extremely pricy and huge task. That said in my country we have had fullHD broadcast like a decade. But large countries have those issues, especially if it's mainly up to companies.

Depends on the service. Netflix does 4k streams. You just need a fast connection for it.
