This article seems to be conflating the two.

You obviously don’t own or operate a business. Losing $25 million of sponsorship money that you had included in your operating budget, is the same as losing 25 million. If they hadn’t budgeted an expected profit, that’s a $25 million complete loss. If they had expected profit then that’s a $25 million loss in profit. Either way it’s a loss. That money wasn’t just-for-fun casual “lottery winning” money, it was investment in the business. The only way they can recoup the loss is to find another investor/sponsor or to cut jobs/services/expenses. It’s definitely a loss.

Morey should have known that you don’t mix business and politics. It was a HUGELY stupid blunder that stands to lose other people their jobs. Houston needs to fire him. Not for what he said, but because he made a TERRIBLE business move and cost the company, and the league, MILLIONS of dollars!

That Burton guy is 100% correct. It's going to take some time to show where the Rockets, Fertitta, Adam Silver, the CCP, and all other financially interested parties truly stand.

Business shouldn’t be mixed with politics. That’s Morey’s big mistake. The moment a business takes a political stand it stops being neutral. It will then lose business, from those aposed, and be held to a certain standard forever by those who stick with it. ANY wavering from that stand will then lose it further business. It is always in a businesses best interest to remain neutral and product based.

Internally it can have a standard of treatment for its employees (ie: harassment policy, which is an extension of human rights) but the moment it starts into selective political opinion, it crosses a line from which it can’t walk back.

That’s why Silver hasn’t had the NBA take a stand on this issue, and rather put out a wishy washy statement about encouraging its players and its business partners (China). He knows, obviously, that taking a political stand as a company is BAD business

Morey didn't mix business and politics. His comment was not associated with commercial dealings of any kind. China brought the business into politics. They didn't have too but in order to keep people under communist or socialist control the populous can't be allowed dissenting opinions.

Morey is lucky he's got good old White Privledge and had term left on his GM contract because if he was an impending ufa in like a year I would guarantee he'd get the NBA's version of the Kapernick treatment being blackballed for life. Sports ain't a place to be a SJW when your words hurt other people's pockets more than your own. If you want to share your opinions so publicly go run for Congress, President or start a non-profit don't ruin the games for the fans.

Wow.
That's one stunning display of talking out of both sides of your mouth, playing both sides of the fence, and cluelessly baiting all while making virtually no sense whatsoever.
It's like you took a dozen random hot takes and shook them up in a bag then mindlessly regurgitated chunks here in a rambling diatribe.

That inane ramble did serve one positive purpose, in that it led to your superb evisceration afterwards.

Maybe I should save BallerTalk's quote so I can paste it the five times per day that it would be appropriate on these boards. I always just ignore those posts.

in the good old days Stern would have exiled Morey to a desert island in a heartbeat.

This is nonsense. It's just western perspective to criticize a country that doesn't follow the same system that it does. Morey should start at home by criticizing white cops that shoot unarmed black people and see how well received it is by the local police departments.

Morey is in the upper management of the Rockets. In fact, aside from the owner, he is the most public face of the Rocket’s management. Morey knows this. What he says is associated with the team, whether he likes it or not, as he is the face of management. It’s part of the job. Every other high level manager of every other multi-million dollar company knows this.

So does this mean that Morey is an anti-capitalist?

No this is incorrect. There is no single organization in the US with whom I or anyone else agrees 100% with the views held by the organization's leadership. If that is your standard I suggest you join some "off the grid" society because by purchasing products some of your money will go to people with whom you disagree.

Had Morey said "we support the protests and as such are deprioritizing or relationships with Chinese brands" then yes he has taken a personal stand in conjunction with a commercial stance. He did not. China made this problem because they know their government cannot objectively defend its actions. Their only hope is to strong arm opposition.

I hope the NBA backs the domestic 85% of its financial base rather than the Chinese 15%. If they go the way of Blizzard and Activision I hope they go bankrupt.
