And healthcare and affordable housing can be funded by taxes, like most other first world countries do.

If you had your company as a hard working plumber you'd quit when they raise your taxes - why work when welfare pays same but you get to do nothing? You'd also be frustrated that "academics" people stir s$it all day while doing nothing productive/tangible for society while forcing you to work even harder & increase pay to your part-time employee who works when he feels like.

If I lived in a fantasy world where welfare allowed me to have as good a life as a working person, then yes I'm sure I'd quit. But in the real world, I know that even if I get taxed, I will continue to work, because people on welfare very poor and difficult lives.

It might you surprise you to learn that taxes have been around for thousands of years, and welfare has been around for over a century, but shockingly, people have continued to work.

Taxation in Canada was introduced in 1917, there was no tax before that.

USA was created to prevent taxation by the Brits, so more than Canadians, the Americans hate taxation to this day.
Not until 1913, the 16th Amendment was ratified, permanently legalizing an income tax in USA.

Welfare program was created in Canada in 1940 and USA much later, became a federal social program after 1990.

People will continue to work as long as they work for themselves and not for others, this is why socialism will never prevail long term.

Not surprising, considering how much disdain Peterson has with the way Universities are run now.

To be clear it was the transphobic incident that got him soft-fired.

Lmao. I don't even like Peterson, but to frame him saying "I will not acquiesce to the government telling me how to speak" as " a transphobic incident" is incredibly scummy and an outright lie.

Framing a transphobic incident as a matter of free speech is incredibly scummy and an outright lie.

Do you really think there were no taxes in Canada before 1917? Or do you consider income tax the only kind of tax?

And by welfare I meant the concept of welfare, which got introduced in the early 1900s in Europe. Also, I feel like you're proving my point here. Canada has been a welfare state since basically the 60's, and we haven't had any problems getting people to work.

"Britain declares war on Germany
As a British colony, Canada joined World War I at Britain's side in 1914. The pressures of financing the war resulted in increasing customs and excise taxes, and in 1916, the federal government began collecting corporation tax.

Government needs revenue to finance war
In 1917, as a temporary measure to help finance the war, the federal government introduced the Income Tax War Act, covering both personal and corporate income. "I have placed no time limit upon this measure . . . a year or two after the war is over, the measure should be reviewed," stated Sir Thomas White, Minister of Finance.

War ends, expenses continue
After the war ended in 1918, the government still needed to pay for war-related expenses such as veterans’ pensions and debt interest, and so in 1920, the federal government introduced sales tax.

Income tax is here to stay
By 1948, income tax was no longer considered temporary and the Income War Tax Act was replaced with the Income Tax Act."

Well we do have able people who take advantage of our welfare system of whom some prefer to be on welfare and make some extra cash "under the table" - they say it is better than holding a regular demanding job.

However we are outside the subject of this thread, sorry about the divagation.

It's an iffy situation because the regime of China does not equal the people of China. There are very nice, moral Chinese people that support the NBA by purchasing products and watching the games. It's OK to love your fans in China, without having to agree with their regime.

So what's the consensus, y'all?

Is The West the best?

Does The Far East suck the least?

Or do we all need to chew this over some more?

I dont want my government telling how I should speak either so I think its pretty normal concern no matter what. Transphobic or not, government should not regulate nouns and adjectives that we are allowed and not allowed to use, period. Language as long as it is alive language has a tendency to regulate itself without any of government 'help'.

Jordan Peterson's position on Bill C-16 is based on a misunderstanding. The Canadian Bar Association had to release a letter addressing it, in which it writes:

"Recently, the debate has turned to whether the amendments will force individuals to embrace concepts, even use pronouns, which they find objectionable. This is a misunderstanding of human rights and hate crimes legislation.

For hate crimes, Bill C-16 adds gender identity or expressions to the identifiable groups protected from those who advocate genocide, publicly incite hatred likely to lead to a breach of the peace or
wilfully promote hatred against them."

https://www.cba.org/News-Media/News/2017/May/CBA-position-on-Bill-C-16

In debates in the Senate, it was literally stated that pronouns would not be legislated.

https://sencanada.ca/en/content/sen/chamber/421/debates/133db_2017-06-15-e

It'd be disgusting if the government was legislating pronouns. Fortunately, it isn't.

The consensus should be that pretty everywhere sucks to more and less blatant degrees and for a variety of reasons, some shared and some unique.

Stand with Hong Kong, but even then that's not prefect and lots of people are doing it for bad reasons (communism bad!). And turns out Lebron is an idiot. What a mess. But i doubt there was ever a clean revolution.

https://www.blogto.com/sports_play/2019/10/pro-hong-kong-shirts-toronto-raptors-opening-game/

The saga of Hong Kong vs. China vs. the NBA continues in Toronto next week with the distribution of more than 7,000 fan-made "The North Stand with Hong Kong" t-shirts on opening night of the Toronto Raptors 2019-2020 season.

A group of local basketball fans who support Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement raised more than $32,000 to produce and give away enough t-shirts to cover roughly a third of the Scotiabank Arena's audience.

The Raptors have not officially endorsed this giveaway, nor is the team involved in the political movement — but a strong faction of Raptors Nation is ready to make a statement.

This is glorious!!!

Never doubt that a group of thoughtful committed citizens could protest so effectively that the evil capitalist machine could only look on in horror.

Good. Remember, Silver is gonna be there. I understand he walked back and clarified stuff to the point of 'acceptable' considering the business arrangements, but personally I still would boo the hell outta this guy. Same with Lebron. At their core they are both sellouts without a working compass for the seriousness of the China situation. That's why they both rely on public backlash to set them straight.
