Raptors sign Matt Morgan

Post#1 » by OakleyDokely » Thu Oct 17, 2019 2:41 pm

The Toronto Raptors announced Thursday they have signed guard Matt Morgan. Per team policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Morgan, 6-foot-2, 174 pounds, averaged 20.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 32.5 minutes in 114 games (112 starts) during four seasons at Cornell University (2015-19). He shot .470 (743-1580) from the field, including .377 (334-885) from three-point range. Morgan graduated as Cornell’s all-time leading scorer (2,333) and was named first-team All-Ivy League as both a junior and senior.

A native of Concord, North Carolina, Morgan was a member of the Raptors’ team at NBA Summer League 2019 in Las Vegas, averaging 4.3 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 13.8 minutes in four appearances.

The Raptors’ roster currently stands at the maximum of 20 players after the team waived forward Sagaba Konate (SAG-uh-bah kuh-NOT-ay) yesterday

I liked the Konate project. I hope he is still in the 905 picture.

Likely to happen since Konate is what he is, a project, and don't think any other team has enough info on him to take a risk on him with a roster spot, so he'll automatically go to the 905 with the $50K bonus. Matt Morgan is in the same boat, will likely be waived after tomorrow's preseason game.

Thanks for the clarification. Our 905 is going to be deep this year. Our org will be a championship contender after all.

Matt shot in the 40% range from the 3 in his last college season making an average of 3-7 3's a game.

The kid can shoot.

At least if he had been the wrestler we'd have a 7 footer out there...

Lonzo Ball shot a similar percentage in college. He's shooting 31% on 228 attempts in the NBA. Not saying Morgan can't be a good shooter at the NBA level, but citing college stats is not very convincing.

Fair point. I wasn't trying to suggest his college shooting % would translate in the NBA, just that the only info we have to go by is his college stats and that "suggests" he's a shooter more than anything.

Nothing to get too excited about. Morgan was signed so he could get a $50k salary top-up. Him and Sagaba both were waived after signing Exhibit 10 deals and if they later sign with the 905 they now have a bit more money to play with. The 905 are just building their team out - that's it.

Is this 50k bonus strategy just a way to create some loyalty, so that if another team comes calling a player will give the Raptors an opportunity to match?

I think it sucks that the Raptors don't control all the players on their G-League teams. If an NBA team wants a 905 player, they should have to offer up something.

Looks like Masai realizes that this Raptors Squad might need more shooting.
