It appears to be working out for the Celtics, too, though. Carsen Edwards has been incredible and they were able to flip Jerome for a 1st rounder from the Suns (which is pretty much going to be lotto).

They didn't flip #24 (Jerome) for the Phoenix Sun's pick. They flipped it for the Milwaukee 2020 pick, which Phoenix owned. So the Celtics traded the 2019 #20 and Aaron Baynes for the 2020 #30 pick and Carsen Edwards.

So we know he is an off ball menace, but who is the kind of player Thybulle can effectively play man D on? He didn't get many possessions on Beal, but a guy like him? Lillard, McCollum, Klay, Harden (not defendable but can he do better than other good defenders), Westbrook, Oladipo, LeVert, Dinwiddie, the adult in the room, Murray, Booker, Mitchell?

What about smaller guards like Kemba, Kyrie, Trae Young, Fox?

I think he would be ideal against a fast big PG like a healthy Wall.

Maybe he will be able to do that eventually, but for right now I'd rather just keep things simple for him, let him cover weaker offensive players and do his thing off ball. Like with Boston I would let Simmons, Richardson, even Ennis handle the Walker and Tatum responsibilities for the most part, and let Thybulle cover the Smarts and Browns.

I think I disagree in this specific case.

Smart and Brown are physical players that like to postup guys they feel they have a strength advantage on. Both would hold a good 30 pounds on Thybulle.

Walker and Tatum are much more finesse players that are very pullup happy guys. Which plays right into the strengths of a long, instinctive shotcontester like Thybulle. I could see a lot of onball blocks by Thybulle on those two players. I think he was born to defend guys like them. Also guys like Dlo, Trae Young, etc.

Boston running their offense through Smart and Brown post ups works for me. He’s on the skinny side but it’s not like he’s Redick or Belinelli out there.

He may be able to cover them I just like Simmons and Richardson on them more. I’m just he’ll cover them a bit with switches and so on.

If hes able to guard those guys in the near future we are set defensively

so how does Matisse fit in with Brett's offensive scheme? can't expect him to nail 3s like RoCo I guess. but I worry a little about putting someone else in the halfcourt who doesn't have a steady jumpshot.

Matisse showed off a pretty nice looking step back 3 attempt in the last preseason game. Didn’t go in but the shot looked clean with the footwork. I think he’s got sneaky offensive potential on the ball. Maybe not an 6-8 dribble guy, but 3-4 dribble shot I think he’s got in him.

Wouldn't surprise me if Thybulle gets assigned to Young for stretches tonight. He's going to be a problem. Solid test for our perimeter D.

I said the preseason did not mean much and let's see what he does in the the regular season. 3 games in. This guy has the potential to be special

League leader on deflections. On limited minutes.

Salary matching will prohibit finding equitable trade value, but what sort of win now piece could Thybulle pry out of the league by the trade deadline if he keeps playing like this? He’s more valuable than Shamet was by far, IMO.

Really just a fun exercise because it can’t actually be done without packaging salary we don’t have to move (signing TJ to a one year balloon would have helped here but alas not done).

I'd really love to hang on to him. Seeing that he's NBA-ready defensively, he kind of fits with the timeline of Embiid and Simmons. You're essentially shortening the window if you trade him for an older vet, that might or might not help you get over the hump this year.

We'd be total fools to trade him. We absolutely NEED his cost-controlled production over the next 4 years while we have bloated salaries (cough Tobias cough) elsewhere. Which is the same reason we should have kept Shamet, but let's not start on that again.

He’s will also be a very good 3pt shooter.

Very good 3pts shooter? No, not as today.
In the future, maybe.

I agree, he'll never be as consistent a shooter as a Danny Green.

Thybulle will probably have some seasons at 35-37% shooting, but I doubt he even gets beyond that.
