Nunn got into foul trouble early and knocked off his rhythm. Herro had a ho-hum game too. Their effort on defense was there though. We'll see what they really are on this west coast road trip.

How did your rookies do, everyone?

RJ needs to put in that work on free throw shooting next summer.

He still looks pretty good all around but he's a great lesson about the differences between NCAA, SL, and the NBA. He can drive, pass, and shoot at a high level that made him look great in SL but he's struggling to get good shots, drives, and passes off against defenders that are a little bigger and faster and savvier than he was facing before. He's got a decent first step but it's not good enough to get him space/separation in the NBA (seems like he mostly attacks closeouts now), and his shot is nice but he's been taking more difficult ones over and around defenders. Still think he'll be good--you can see the talent when he's on the court--but it might take a long time for him to adjust.

That’s what people were worried about in his pre-draft eval.. the main criticisms I saw of NAW were that he doesn’t have the raw athleticism to create separation and get to his spots on the court, dribble out of traps etc. And that because his frame is so slight that he may not have the strength to get into the paint and finish consistently.

I actually liked his game in college a lot, I think he has the IQ and work ethic to adjust eventually. But it’s interesting to see how every year there are these SL standouts who get slowed down once they start playing real games.

How did your rookies do, everyone?

Nunn is shooting 51% on twos and 44% on 3s while taking 16 FGA , dude was on a crazy 5-6 game hot streak. Basically for the other shoe to drop he has to find a way to start drawing fouls.. his FT rate on the season is 0.095, I’ve never seen anything close to that scoring volume be sustained with such a low FT rate.

Needs to start doing the Dion Waiters “Aye!” when he drives to the hole lool

Ok not hating on RJ or anything just comparing since he’s 1 and 2 with Ja right now imo but

Ja is averaging more PPG and APG on 10% higher TS% and 4 more PER in 9 fewer minutes. Don’t know how RJ is dominating this poll

Ja is also averaging nearly 5 turnovers, RJ has 2 less per game

Obviously that's the reason for less Morant hype. Simple reason, more people watch Knicks' games than Memphis.

Big deal. He’s also got much better defensive advanced stats. Better defense > 2 meaningless turnovers on 2 tanking teams. You’re saying 2 turnovers is the reason he’s leading the poll?

Morant actually has more hype on social media than Barrett

Morant at the rim is something special. Not sure of a good comparison but he has some serious hangtime.

Ja also had a couple rough games to start and RJ was playing very well. RJ honestly deserved most of the votes at that point though I think PJ deserves a lot of love too. If Ja keeps having great games then the poll will slowly begin to reflect it as people change their votes.

Nunn has been the best rookie overall, but unless he continues to be the clear-cut best I think he ultimately won't win due to the previous battery incident. Miami fans can rightfully feel slighted in that case, but hopefully will be happy they found a stud basically for free who could play a role in them returning to contender status.

Grizzlies have JA on a minute restriction which is insane since he is a rookie.

Also I know NY is a really awful team but the Grizzlies have straight TRASH around JA

They are shooting 25% from 3 so far and that's with teams double teaming JA in the paint they went 3 for 35 tonight against the rockets and 2 out of those 3 came from JA himself

Ja had the greatest missed dunk ever and almost killed himself. Must watch if you haven’t seen it

Another great game from him

Eric Paschall is a beast. Dubs took him because he was supposed to be NBA ready. They were not wrong. AT ALL.

Always thought this stickied thread is too restrictive in the spirit of the topic. It should expanded to include all break out players or up and comers. Most notable players don't emerge their 1st years, and many that do end up turning into fool's gold.

DiVincenzo is fun to watch and was the Bucks' #2 player in terms of +/- after Giannis last year, but he didn't make a name for himself in part due to injuries. Now he's making that impact or more so over a broader sample (17, 3/4, 7 rebs and swarming defense tonight) and it warrants mention. So does that mean it's worth starting an entire thread about the individual player? Now that would be too much probably. So there's not a niche. Game threads..but it gets lost there.

Ja had offseason surgery, missed all of summer league & is 6 games into his season. Maybe Grizz are erroring on the side of caution in not putting a full load on his knee to start the year where wins aren't a priority?.

I get your excitement, Ja is really good but lets not act like he's perfect & it's all on his teammates. His defense is lacking & he's turning the ball over at a high rate trying to be flashy more so than efficient. With 2 minutes left in last nights game down 8, he was leading a break & dropped a blind back pass to the 3pt line for an unexpecting Crowder, who over ran it. A little more simple & the game is within 6 instead of a weak TO & down 10 but I get it. He's already shown the potential to have no holes in his game.

Memphis point differential on the 3pt line, is considerable. It's where they have lost all their games. They held Houston to 37% from the field but shot 12% from 3, in a 7pt loss. Ja is still getting into the lane with little to no spacing & if his teammates could hit an open 3, his assist numbers would be even better. As you also pointed out, he was responsible for 2 of the 3 made 3's for Memphis on the night.

I absolutely love that Rui, Nunn, Paschall (and PJ Washington) are leading the way while the one-and-done kids try to find their way early.
