What happened to Jokic's 3PT shot

Post#1 » by spikeslovechild » Sat Nov 9, 2019 3:47 am

Prior to this game (0-6 so far) in the last 87 games he is shooting .305 on his 3PT attempts.

Is it the added weight?

Jokic has jock-itch. That's the real reason for his early struggles. It's hard to shoot when your balls are on fire.

Not that he had a lot of lift on his jumper to start, but I'm not even sure if he's trying to get lift with his legs on his jumpers.

He's just trying to give other teams a fair chance.

Last regular season was bad, but don't forget in the playoff last season and in 2017-18 season he has a great 40% 3pt percentage. He has potential in this area.

He had a bad night from 3. They were all falling short. It happens. Sometimes you gotta just keep shooting, and he hit 2 3's when it really mattered.

Great game otherwise though.

Saw the end of that game during halftime of the Lakers game and Jokic legit looks obese. First time I had seen him this year, and yikes...

Shoulda seen him 7 games ago. It actually looks like he's losing weight already.

Only good 3pt shooter to ever go through a rough stretch.

On general level does weight affect your shot? It does, but if you are not used to it. If he shot 40% earlier weighting same as now then it is purely rough stretch. But lets assume he is 20-30 pounds heavier than he is normally then it might be the reason for him to shoot badly. Strength to the 3 point shot comes from the legs. So if you weight 30 pounds more than you normally do then you must either use your arms more or jump harder to get the ball to the same distance as earlier, but both of those are something outside your normal shooting motion, so it would lessen the accuracy. This or that it is most likely temporary, either he loses weight or he learns to shoot with his current weight.

I can’t call him a good shooter. 4/5 years in his career he’s been 33% or less and aside from his outlier 17-18 season he is at 31.4% for his career.

For me, the norm is the 80% of his career outside of that 2017-18 season. I see him as a below average shooter who had one good outlier year.

He's fatter and slower which means he doesn't get to his spots as quickly. He's also going to be more tired with the added weight. He needs to go on a **** diet. Coaching staff needs to talk to him.

Factors such is increased height, arm length, and hand size have all shown to have some degree of negative correlation with the ability to hit FT's.

But player weight (independent from height) has actually been shown to be the biggest negative factor for some reason.

I found a much better study on the details of all these details before, but can't find it. This other one comes to the same conclusion though.

That's why I didn't call him a "great" shooter. You're basically comparing him to Austin Rivers. Rivers is a little better but his last couple of years have been no better than Jokic and plenty of people call him a "good" or "decent" shooter. Mathematically, a 3pt shooter at 35% is roughly equivalent of a 50%+ 2 pt shooter. So Jokic isn't terrible. His job isn't to be a great 3pt shooter. He just has to be good enough to keep his defenders honest - and he does exactly that.

Yeah it just sort of stood out to me because watching the game Embiid was actually coming off him to defend the paint and allowing him to shoot as many 3's as he wanted. That would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago.

I had no idea of how bad his 3PT shooting numbers were prior to this game. I dunno Jokic is not my favorite player but that Denver team is so much better when he's draining 3's because he opens up the driving lanes by drawing the teams best interior defender.
