Re: Game 10: Portland vs Atlanta 6:00pm SNW
Good to get a win, and I'd give Simons the game ball...
Without his shotmaking in the 3rd, the Blazers probably end up losing this one. He was able to manufacture points when the rest of the Blazers weren't hitting anything.
Nice to see Bazemore hit a couple. He seems to be much better at catch and shoot shots than off the dribble. He commits way too much on defense...especially on PGs. They can just attack his space and either blow by him or get fouls every time.
I'm on board with the narrative that Whiteside is getting used improperly. Having him as the big screener on the perimeter negates multiple things that he does well, and puts him in a position to have to execute things he's not very good at. Kanter was a much better fit as a Nurkic-lite...luckily, I think Whiteside is just a stop-gap. I don't think Stotts is going to redesign everything just so the team can play to his strengths...
Mario has been pretty brutal. I kind of agree that Little might be the better option, although I like that Mario can put the ball on the floor...as far as I've seen, Little can't really do that against NBA defenses.
I've made it abundantly clear time and time again how I feel about CJ...
Lastly, is it just me or do the Blazers look like they are shooting a lot more mid-range shots this year? In years past, outside of Turner, it seems the offense was much more built around 'shots for 3 or in the key'...

I'm so excited for this dude. Offence looks so easy for him and he's already got some go-to moves that get him open, like the stepback/side-step 3pt or his floater game in the mid range. Shown flashes with his passing too. That should only improve as he learns to read the PnR and overall game more (helps having Dame to help him learn about the PnR too).
He's averaging ~9 shots a game and around 20mpg. Should try and bump that upto 12-13 shots and 25ish minutes. Just have him play all mins when one of Dame/CJ aren't on the floor. Play from 6min mark of the 1st q through to the 6min mark of the 2nd q. Repeat for 2nd half and you've got 24 solid mins. Add in a few more minutes for 3 guard sets and you've got a real good opportunity and a tough 3 guard lineup to defend.
It looks like they're already starting to do this, although a lot of it has to be because of Hood's injury. I'd love to see them continue to give him these types of minutes even when Hood is back.

I'm hoping Simons can keep improving. If so he could make McCollum expendable by the deadline.

I didn't expect Simons to look this good, this quickly. His feel on offense is unreal, something that you can work on but in the end is just a natural, unteachable feel. He is far and away the main reason to tune into this team outside Damian. The squad as a whole is pretty brutal to watch.
I am disappointed in Mario, he is holding his own on defense and not making mistakes but when he once was labeled as forcing it, he is now way too passive. And he isn't hitting his open shots. I don't think its crazy to talk about giving his time to Little who plays with more urgency and can be a mini Crash (Basically Hollis-Jefferson) who hopefully develops into a big Crash.
The season is not going our way, we are not getting the bounces, breaks or injury luck that happened last year. Hitting or exceeding expectations will depend on players stepping up that we didn't expect. Give Little that chance to step up. I would argue GTJR should get more run as well.

Well first we should not have needed an overtime to beat the Hawks at home, yeah we are injured but they are much younger and missing their second best player as well. They were missing a lot of easy shots early so it very easily could have been a win for them. All in all not a very convincing win, but at least we didn't lose again on our home court.
CJ yikes took 23 shots to score 23 points. Right now he has taken 202 shots on the season and scored 198 points on the season. At least Simons showed up. That kid is electric. Probably my favorite moment from him was in the middle of his scoring run when he was just scorching, Dame threw the ball ahead to him on a fast break. Most kids with the hot hand would take that shot, but he waited just a second and got the ball in to Tolliver at the rim - the right team play. Dame gave him a little fist bump on the way back letting him know it was a good and unselfish decision. If only CJ could display that, but CJ always chooses to heat check himself until he misses. But yeah, that bit of positive reinforcement spoke volumes to me about both Lillard and Simons.

If Ant keeps this up for the next few months it IMO really makes CJ and his huge salary next 4-5 yrs expendable and allows the club to fill other needs like PF, big Q is whether Olshey would pull the trigger

Yep he is like some sort of hybrid Lillard+CJ or something unreal that this kid is still not even 21 years old, and is doing this with barely seeing the floor last year. I have no doubt in my mind that if Anfernee went to a college like Duke or something, and showed some of this stuff he would have been a top 3 pick in the draft. This might be one of the biggest steals in the draft we have ever had, and a lot of teams might end up wishing they didn't pass on this kid.

Yep, I suspect he turns out the biggest Blazers draft steal since Zach Randolph in 2001 who we took #19. He should be seeing 24mpg at this point, maybe more as the season goes on.

the biggest steal in the draft Portland has had is getting Lillard for Gerald Wallace

Props to Olshey for finding this kid. Ant is the total package, doing alot of things quite well already, beyond just scoring. His passing and defense is already better than BOTH CJ and Dame. If he continues to get better, who knows how good he'll be. He is the best true PG on this team, without a doubt in my mind.
Come Febuary, a trade like CJ / FRP for K Love / Sexton is the type of move I would have a really hard time passing on.

Why does Cleveland want CJ when Sexton is a baby and putting up tremendous offensive numbers?
I would argue that Sexton, right now, clearly has more value than CJ. A straight CJ for Love deal seem much closer, and I don't do that move.

I'm not saying that that's THE move, but rather something along those lines. We won't be able to trade CJ until February anyway, so until then, we won't know what trade options are, or will be available.

I'm a little scared to ask, but I'd love to hear your rationale...

I think he’s got more elements to his game than cj and unless we go with a small ball lineup I could see him being more worthy of the starting sg spot than cj by the end of his rookie deal
If drafting guards won championships olshey would have a title by now. Unfortunately he makes a lot of oddball signings in between the great drafts..

Of course it's my opinion. What other opinion do I have?
If you are going to take exception to my use of the word dumb, why don't you do it in the context I used the word. Respond to the message where I used the word.

I'll give your advise its proper consideration before I file it.

I think Love for CJ would make us better overall Simons would thrive in the starting lineup.
Return to Portland Trail Blazers
