NBA Could Incentivize Winner Of Midseason Tournament With Extra Draft Pick

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Dec 2, 2019 5:13 pm

The NBA could incentivize the winner of its proposed midseason tournament with an extra draft pick, league sources told Marc Stein of The New York Times.

Stein adds that the elements of a midseason tournament remain in place despite increasing skepticism from teams.

The NBA has been proposing an in-season tournament that would take place after Thanksgiving and extend into mid-December.

NBA players do not care about their teams getting draft picks. You have to incentivize THE PLAYERS not the teams.

I was going to say the same thing. And money is not the answer either. Unless it's the bench players who are going to play. Imagine Curry, AD or Beal putting it on the line for a mid season tournament so the team could get an extra pick or they could make an extra $30K

Players are getting millions of dollars with their career earnings from salary alone  they're fine.

They'll want to play if it gets ratings which gives them sponsors which gives them even more $$$

What happens if the star players get injured in the mid-season tournament? They are out for the season and no more eyeballs on them. This tournament seems like it is tailor made for the rookies, bench players and veterans who want to hang on for another year or two.

That's useless motivation for the players and even some coaches. Players are focused on Larry OB. Give the team the tie-breaker or some type of bye into the real playoffs.

If this was true, then why does tanking exist?

How does that incentivize the players?
Play hard so that we can draft another player that might potentially replace you? No thanks.

Players don't tank so their team can get a better pick, teams tank by putting **** players on the court.

See the first 10 games of the regular season. Tons of injuries then.

Nothing happens, it's not shocking if that happens.

Silver needs to go! His globalization of the game over what’s best for the league is coming to a point of no return.

Also if I’m a player and my salary is locked in and I see a 3-4 week opening from Thanksgiving to Christmas I’m coming down with back spasms and taking a vacation.

This idea gets worse and worse. Let's give the best teams in the league an extra draft pick. Nothing wrong with that.

Okay this idea is staring to grow on me.

Let's be honest - of any major sport, the NBA regular season has turned into a bit of a snoozefest. It's 20 games in and we already know which teams are making the playoffs and which ones are going through to round 2.

Throw in some mid season action!

but the best team may not want to put their starters in because of the risk of injury

the tourny is perfect for teams to test out their roster and rotation against NBA calibur teams and not some summer league/g-league scrub

There is roster turnover and new players in camp every year regardless. Play hard so you don't get replaced, either on the roster or in the rotation.

Before you call on Adam Silver to go, you ought to do a search on his predecessor. I'm old enough to actually remember both and I can tell you without a doubt, Silver has done a remarkable job.
