Fred VanVleet Could Command $25M-$30M Per Season In Free Agency

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Dec 3, 2019 2:07 am

Fred VanVleet projects to be one of the NBA's most coveted unrestricted free agents during the 2020 offseason.

"One team told me last week that they think he's going to get between $25 million and $30 million per season," said Bobby Marks on The Brian Windhorst & The Hoop Collective Podcast.

VanVleet re-signed with the Toronto Raptors in 2018 on a two-year, $18 million deal. Toronto signed Kyle Lowry to a one-year, $31 million extension through 20-21 before the start of the 19-20 season.

VanVleet went undrafted out of Wichita State in 2016.

More props to him if he can get it but I doubt he'll be on a winner if he gets that.

Bobby Marks is usually pretty reliable, but paying FVV 25/30 annually is not a move someone who wants to keep their job does

FVL went undrafted in 2016 so he is entitled to the same rfa max deals as those who did get drafted because he has under 7 seasons of nba experience by next summer. The only difference is he will be a ufa and can sign basically anywhere he wants. Raptors own his bird rights though and they may be able to negotiate a discount on his annual salary in exchange for more guaranteed money since they are the only team that can offer him a 5 year deal. However, things could get really interesting real fast if he makes the allstar team, the all-nba team or wins the nba most improved player award. One or all three of those things could happen if he keeps up his production as a starter and Raptors keep winning. He could become entitled potentially to a rose rule max (if he makes the all-nba team) and Raps may have to offer him a bigger 5 year max deal and annual salary higher than the contract extension Siakam just signed for. This could literally be the Charlotte Kemba supermax situation again except it is a winning team that is letting go of a key roster player.

He is only 25 if you ink him to a 5 year contract next summer from ages 26-31 you would literally be paying only for prime years of his career. His personality and work ethic is something to marvel at unless he has some catastrophic injury like a Derrick Rose he should keep getting better or maintain his current level of production for the life of that contract. This not the Lakers signing injury prone Luol Deng to a 4 year $71M contract at age 31 situation.

What he lacks in size he makes up for on the defensive end. His game will age much like Kyle Lowrys and will create a seamless transition when that time comes. His stats are really close to Jrue Holiday this season with more steals and less turnovers.

the point guard position is the most stacked position in the league, and gm's are hesitant to hand out big contracts to little guards.

starting PG's better than him currently:

Steph
Westbrook
Lillard
Lowry
Holiday
Simmons
Trae
Ja
CP3
Kyrie
Kemba
Conley

Then you have teams that have their PG of the future like Charlotte with Rozier, Sacramento with Fox, Mil with bledsoe etc. There's only a handful of teams that might be desperate enough to throw him that contract (and can afford it) - Knicks and Bulls come to mind.

Luka Doncic would like to have a word with you.

And I’d drop CP3, Conley (sad but true; he’s not aging well); and Simmons from the list.

A bit premature on Ja, though he may well be better eventually. I have mixed feelings about Young. Not sure if he’ll ever develop the ability to make those around him better. And at 60, old, fat, and slow, I can play as good a defense sad he does most nights. He might as well wave a cape and say “Olé!”

Except FVV isn't all offence, his defense is in another stratosphere compared to IT. The bigger concern in my eyes is the way he plays, he bangs around and hits the floor a LOT. Sadly, I can honestly see him missing a lot of games over his career due to injuries (I hope I'm wrong).

He's a middle of the league starter. But free agency is rather weak next year. I do think he will get overpaid but probably not too close to $30M.

I feel old...I remember the days good players would get 25-30m over 2 or 3 years.

People will continue to sleep

He has been an impact player since his 2nd season in the league. The kid can play and he does it on both ends of the court. He may not be a go to guy, but you can plug him in anywhere and know that he is going to do his job and have a major impact. It just isn't going to jump off the screen.

He can and probably will get 4/80+ and he deserves it. I don't think 100 is out of the question.

I don't think he's worth 25 Million, but a lot of players aren't worth their contract.
Would look good and fit the Wolves youth movement.

I think the most you could go for him is Malcom Brogdon money. 21ish million average.

He's in the range of guys like Ricky Rubio (17m), Eric Bledsoe (17.5m), Bojan Bogdanovic (18.3m), Terry Rozier (18.9m), Zach Lavine (19.5m), Malcom Brogdon (21.5m). Good for him for making a real career for himself! He's really earned it...
Go Knicks!
