That trade would be the Cavs just dumping Love's salary. Even if Love is pissed, it doesn't benefit them to just dump his salary. They aren't signing any FA's anyway.
Maybe maybe not. They may find free agents they like, they just won't be at the top tier guys.
Beyond that, people continually underestimate the value of salary cap space with a long term rebuild. You don't have to sign guys. You can take bad money on. If you just used that 30 million every year to take bad money, you end up with 4, 5, 6 mid to late 1st round picks over the next 3 years. If they can get an asset without adding long term money, then great. If not, clearing that space is still a good option.
No, everyone thinks salary cap space is great. But everything out there says CLE wants some value and are even willing to eat some bad money to get it. If they are going to eat the bad money to deal him, then they aren't dumping him to use the space to eat bad deals later.
I'm sure they are willing to take some bad money. Eat it now, or eat it later, it ultimately doesn't matter. Ultimately, the bad money is going to bring as much "value" as Love does. The space is where the value lies. There is absolutely a benefit to clearing his contract off the books, which you disputed.
If they take on extra years of bad money right now, but land multiple 1st round picks, then great. It is a quicker route to the desired goal. Holding onto Love beyond next summer, because they can't get what they want, will end up benefiting them less than clearing his cap with expirings this year.
