Re: Knicks Hire David Blatt as Basketball Ops Consultant
This is a bull move. I love Blatt so it hurts me for saying that but they are just paying him money to showcase his legacy.
The issue with this Knicks organization is presidency. Donnie Walsh is the only one who did ok. As long as they keep Steve Mills in there and allow his friends to join the party, nothing will change.
It’s like if Jim Dolan remains the frontman of his rock band and hires Joe Perry as his guitar sidekick instead of the current Straight Shot Band. He’d still be a terrible frontman and lead a bad band.
Mills needs to step down for the better of the Knicks and let a real frontman run this ship.

What a joke. If Mills is gone, he gets to keep a buddy around anyway.

As a coach I can undestand hiring blatt but as a bball consultant? Waste of talent.

I really don't know what to think about this move. I can't be bothered. Just let Miller do his thing and make a couple solid trades at the deadline. Also... play the kids. Period.

CP in the Houuuuuuuuuuuse. We needed to beef up our Euro scouting, whether Mills stays or not.

Mills could pull a Billy King and still get to keep his job.

Re: Knicks Hire David Blatt as Basketball Ops Consultant
I think that Blatt is a good hire, considering the circumstances. He is very well respected and understands high quality bball. He is a very harsh critic and pays very close attention to the details of a guys game. That's important. I think he has a good eye for a toxic player or someone that provides empty stats (which Mills does not).
I think that this hiring signifies that the Knicks expect to have a lot of player movement. They may add picks (to which Blatt can help with international scouting) or they may take back players (to which Blatt can offer an independent outside opinion). No matter what, it means that Mills is in power. However, I think that Dolan respects Blatt and wants him and Mills to both agree on decisions before they are made.

Re: Knicks Hire David Blatt as Basketball Ops Consultant
Mills feels Houston nipping at his heals and wanting his job. He'll try to blame Fiz on Perry and he can't let Houston to be the guy that found the coach. So he brings in some shiny new toy to distract Dolan from his failures and it probably means we'll draft that kid from Israel in the first round.

But Blatt having coached internationally doesn't mean he has international scouting experience anymore than Phil Jackson having coached in the NBA mean he has NBA scouting experience (as we saw).

It typically means that he has an abundance of international contacts. To say that it doesn't help is a little... careless?

So it took Mills 17 years in charge to finally realize that he needs to hire a guy who...once again...isn't a scout or a front office person...to help him with getting international contacts? Mills biggest skill is supposed to be that he has vast reaching contacts already.
I know you guys want to wish that this is a good move but how many times do you need to wool pulled over your eyes by the the smoke and mirrors man to realize that this is just another boob move by a big boob?

It might take Mills 17 years more to realize that much of his philosophy (if there is one) and a majority of his contacts are weak. Still, that's not an indictment on Blatt. I like Blatt and think that he knows the key concepts of a winning team (i.e. - winning the turnover battle, rebounding battle, defense, passing, shooting, unselfish play, etc.). I don't think that Fizdale understood the math behind a wining team or the importance of the details. Meanwhile, I think that Mills is easily distracted by highlights. If you catch THJr at the perfect 6 second stretch and have had enough drinks, he looks like a prototypical 2 guard. If you catch DSJ highlights, he looks like Steve Francis/Baron Davis. Randle looks like Barkley in highlights. Mills gets too giddy about the good plays without factoring in the bottom 50% of play... similar to Isiah when he was in NY. Perry... he understands team building from a cap standpoint. I don't think he has ever proven that he can put together an entire team successfully. He has proven that he wont kill your team, though... which is better than what we had for a long time.
Still, none of them are great at really picking out individual talents that fit within a playing style. I think that Blatt can help with that. He has coached a lot of very successful teams. That can't be discounted... even if it was in Russia and Europe. Some interesting tidbits is that he loves Croatian players and guys who can shoot the hell out of the ball.
Also, his success with the Russian Int'l team has not been discussed enough. He did a really great job. Very impressive.

Re: Knicks Hire David Blatt as Basketball Ops Consultant
stepping outside of the current whirlwind of narratives, i've honestly been comfortable with perry as salary cap manager. still, i have not agreed with most of his basketball decisions (players acquired by trade or free agency). if the idea is to have blatt's IQ/voice guiding perry's moves, that's reasonably comforting going into the trade season. i'm not generally opposed to transitioning our organization instead of overhauling it, but it really does feel like we've procrastinated a house cleaning for too long. we should just get someone proven as an executive to replace mills at the top and let them work out who stays or goes, down the line

honestly i'd get over it if mills/perry/blatt had the keys next season too(provided they dont trade any picks or add long term salary), but after that it's really time for an overhaul. especially if there's even a 5% shot at landing Giannis.
