If this comes to fruition, teams will likely play younger players a lot and rest their stars.
An extra first round pick is almost zero incentive to risk your stars wearing down or getting hurt.

What a dumb idea. Whoever that came up with this idea should be fired and banned from working for the nba for life.

Y’all are a bunch of haters. I guarantee you most people’s interest will go up for an in-season tournament. The people that are talking sh*t are probably the same people who’ll be blowing up this forum with discussion once the tournament actually happens

Basketball is basketball, and as fans you're probably right, we will watch it. My beef is the changes that are being discussed simply to have an in-season tournament.
Shorten the season to 78 games in order to add more games for the tournament- this goes against what the players want (they want less games). If it's a four game tournament, than the point is mute.
A $1M dollar purse per player to the winner- for the end of the bench guys, $1M is a NICE bump. But for the stars, the guys we tune in for every night, this sum does not matter.
An extra lottery pick to the winning team- we have enough issues with competitive parity in the league as is, now you're going to give an already dominant team the potential to add a young star too?
The whole concept just seems very forced right now.

A tournament that starts around Thanksgiving and ends after Christmas is nothing but an excuse for every player worth any value to take a nice holiday vacation with their families. Every player making a few million a year would have back pain or a sore knee, anything to not have to play in a meaningless tournament. Using Seth Curry as an example, he's no star and a tournament like this could help him showcase himself better but he's making 7 million a year and with the potential of getting hurt and the prospect of staying home with his family for a month with no consequences while he would still receive his regular season paychecks, you would have to ask yourself, is the risk worth an extra 1 million and draft pick that one day could just replace you?
This will be an epic failure and watch the rating dwindle down to nothing if this happens. Silver must go now before he makes things any worse, his action are so blatantly dumbfounding that he gave David Stern a brain hemorrhage!

Why would an in season tournament change the viewer ratings of regular season games and what incentive is there for teams to even play their better players? Giving an additional 1st round pick to a team that's already good defeats the purpose of the draft in the first place, which is to balance the talent. It would make more sense to just count the tournament games (inc loser bracket) toward the team's regular season record.
If the NBA wants to generate more interest in regular season games, get rid of intentional fouling already. When the majority of close games end via skills competition it's not only slow and boring, it cheapens the entire game and makes me want to not watch.

If they want to make the teams play harder in the regular season and make the regular season more interesting, then they need to cut the number of playoff teams from 16 to 8.

Given a quality set of rules and an interesting sport, gimmicks just dilute the sport in desperate attempts to siphon more $$ to the business side. The game of greed is not a sporting contest. Sponsors on uniforms is wrong. Reports on shoes are bs, dunking as a point of interest is garbage, all things that take attention from dribbling, passing, shooting, and strategy diminish the sport to please accountants like Silver. The All Star game is a joke, don't even start with gambling, which poisons everything it touches. So take the tournament and shove it.

No, because the players won't take it seriously. Why would they? They're trying to win an NBA championship.
If you make it as serious as the UEFA champions league, it would be very cool. But you should include teams from Europe.

This has always been my favourite idea (i even created a very long thread about it on the GB a year ago).
Make the tournament more interesting by adding teams outside of the NBA.
8 groups a 5 teams, best 2 teams of every group advance in the KO phase.
32 NBA teams (expansion to Vegas and Seattle )
4 teams of the Euroleague final four
4 teams from China
7 additional teams (Australia, Africa, South America)
This would be so great!!
