As someone who grew up in Los Angeles and had the opportunity to follow Kobe's entire career, this F'ing sucks. I feel like i lost a family member even though i never personally knew him, losing Gigi also takes it to new heights as the worst moments in sports history for me.

Probably should lock this thread up once it reaches 81 pages, and then start another.

I've seen kobe play his entire career and I was a kobe hater no doubt. But today has been the hardest day for me dealing with a death of a public figure.

So much of my life revolved around watching/discussing kobe, and one thing everyone has in common is the level of respect you have for him.

The only thing that came remotely close to this for me was the death of doc Halladay.

Seeing this just hurts, man

I'm still in the shock and denial phase. When I see the end of life date, it doesn't seem real to me. I've never experienced these sorts of feelings for any celebrity in the past.

Personally, I cannot even move to reflect on highlights and good times. I'm still stuck on neutral trying to figure out how to get life going again. My mind cannot accept that he's gone.

Probably.
Never seen anything like this. Guys from all sports and all walks of life paying tribute. Pretty much all NBA players, the NFL guys at the pro bowl, soccer players, politicians, etc, are paying tribute. The top 10 trending Reddit posts are all Kobe related. I log into random online communities and games and they are talking about Kobe.

Every single team playing today had a moment of silence and paid tribute to him on the court. NBA even let Trae wear #8 today.

Shocking and sad, it still hasn't fully sunk in to me. RIP to all who were on the helicopter

I'm glad they decided to go on with the games. Thinking about it there would be no worse way to acknowledge Kobe's death than by not playing basketball.

Somebody needs to seriously go off tonight in one of the games as a tribute to Kobe. Siakam gave me hope when had 30 in the first half but I'm thinking something bigger, maybe Dame can get cooking later tonight

I'm jumping into this thread on Page 66 or so, but anyhow:
-- Athletes may be more conscious of mortality than a typical young person is.
-- Beyond that, I bet a lot of them grew up literally fantasizing about being Kobe or Jordan or whoever.
-- Great player. Detailed rankings of that greatness don't matter at the moment.
Redacted
-- The start on his post-playing career was impressive, and I say that as somebody who suspects that what he said about basketball was often incorrect.
-- Come to think of it, the three great Lakers guards who are in the GOAT-rankings discussions as players could be viewed as in the GOAT-ranking discussions for post-playing careers too. West is super-high in the executive GOAT rankings; the only ex-player who comes remotely close is Riley. Magic had a lot of business success, which shouldn't obscure his exec and talk show failures. And Kobe, while he wouldn't really rank all that high because he didn't live long enough, was off to a very impressive start.

I don't think you meant any harm with this post, but let's leave discussions of Kobe's past indiscretions out of this thread. Everyone makes mistakes.

Well, moderation is difficult and poorly paid, so I won't complain too vigorously. But editing out my compliments too ... well, it seems that all that's welcome here are saccharine expressions of generic sorrow, which isn't very interesting to me, so I'm out.

is there a Kobe statue outside of the staples center? if not that should get made asap. maybe it can be with his daughter by his side..that would make it extra special.

I just cannot believe this. This is too surreal. I just cannot believe I'm watching all these amazing Kobe highlights through his career and he is gone. Like so many have said, this is going to take some time to get over.

I’m 65 years old. Laker fan my whole life. Worst sports day by far.

Since one of the GOAT GB mods is proposing this to honor one of the GOAT ballers, it shall be done.

The idea couldn't have come from a more appropriately-named RealGMer, either, unfortunately.

What's appropriate here are expressions of how people feel in the wake of tragic news, not summary statements about irrelevant and long-resolved incidents of indiscretion.

Don't dismiss these peoples' expressions as generic or insincere; you have neither the insight to make that evaluation nor the clout for anyone to be particularly interested in whether their sentiments move you.
