A few years ago Miami goes 30-11 and instead of just thinking... wow, we're overachieving Miami goes all-in with extending that group and it screws them for a few years. This year Miami once again overachieves in the 1st half of the season, some wins by utilizing the zone more since most teams aren't ready for it and then once again expect this team to maintain overachieving. I really don't get this acceptance of overachieving and not making moves to upgrade the roster and UTILIZE that great 1st half. Other than playing in better weather I don't know why Giannis would want to go to Miami, this FO has really screwed up twice in the last few years by expecting the overachieving to continue(which is why almost everyone except the Miami FO expected this team to come back down to earth).
The FO didn't even bring in a backup defensive big, because of the lack of defensive bigs, if Bam goes out for any length of time this team is going to be bad. Maybe with everyone but Bam healthy, they can stay .500 but for some reason, no defensive big/rim protector was added to the roster. It would be just layup lines and hope Miami out shoots the other team from 3.
Miami got a gift with Butler forcing himself to Miami when they had no cap space and the FO basically said thanks and we'll wait till 2021, it just seems like they're fine wasting the last of Butler's prime.
Well I already feel like Giannis isn't coming here to begin with. That aside, who was the team interested in trading for that wouldn't have affected the cap space for that summer?
I absolutely HATE limiting the team for 2 years for "cap space". This team could have had CP3 who WILL be at or near an all-star level player his whole contract(even if it's bad), that's 2-3 all-stars for at least 3 years. Gallo was obtainable but hey... can't go into 2021. I'm sure there are others, like D.Green but no... 2021. All I can say is good luck with that while this team probably is a first-round exit the 2 years before that 2021 summer(the team could be worse next year if Riley continues to keep 2021 cap space available) and will have a 32-year-old max player on the roster to try to entice a top tier guy joining Miami... it's not looking all that good.
