Butler was on the JJ Redick Podcast today...
"Hell yeah, it was difficult. It was so different, and on any given day, me as a person, as a player, I didn't know who the f--k was in charge. I think that was my biggest thing. I didn't know what the f--k to expect whenever I would go into the gym, whenever I'd go into the plane, whenever I'd go into the game. I was like: 'Man.' I think I was as lost as the next motherf--ker."
The website I think go this wrong, they were talking last year so I'd assume he's talking about Minnesota, not Philly. In Minnesota Thibs was in the hot seat, Thibs absolutely would have given Butler the max as the coach and President of Basketball operations but he wasn't in charge, the owner who also told GMs to bypass the FO to talk directly to him was the issue, that whole situation was really messed up, not Phillies. It sounded exactly how I had expected it, IMO Butler didn't want to stay in such a volatile situation, he loves Thibs but probably didn't think Thibs would be there long(which he wasn't), the owner should have never went to a consultant to hire a coach he didn't mesh with. Glen Taylor needs to have a ton of input, probably one of the reasons Minnesota has been horrible for 15+ years, but to his credit, he seems to be allowing Gersson Rosas to do his job. How different of a franchise is Minnesota if Glen Taylor doesn't refuse to trade Wiggins for Butler and only trades Wiggins and Dunn (no pick swap to downgrade to LaVine) for Butler, drafts Markannan and has a starting lineup of Teague, LaVine(when he came back), Butler, Markannan, and Towns, maybe not great defensively but wow, that's an incredible offensive team.
The reason why Butler isn't in Philly, sounded like they'd give him the max but someone in the FO or higher asked if B.Brown could "control" Butler, hearing that he was done in Philly.
Butler also said it was really #)($(F up that in the 2nd round B.Brown decided to take the ball away from Simmons and give it to Butler, the reason why Butler said it was messed up was because it was completely changing how the team had played up to that point. To me(my opinion) B.Brown knew the best option was Butler with the ball, but to keep a young star happy he had kept the ball in Simmons' hands till it was time to win or go home and had Embiid not missed a game being sick, that series may not have went past 6 games.
Also Butler and JJ mention how much control the coaches have, they tell you your role and you do it, it's your job. Butler mentions Robinson having Spoelstra go off on him for attacking the basket(early on), saying you're there to shoot 3s. Both Butler and JJ mention someone may have a limited role but as the coach feels more comfortable with them, will usually expand their role.
