We are now outpacing Italy in total confirmed cases if you match up both countries' timelines to when they had 157 (Italy) and 158 (USA) cases. Increased testing here no doubt is playing a role as lack of available tests previously held down the USA numbers (data is from
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries)
For reference, the nationwide lockdown in Italy started on 3/9. Fatality numbers are a lot different, as USA population is 5x of Italy (so more cases before our medical care system is over capacity.)

EDIT- since I made the chart, more recent info from all of today's testing now has total confirmed USA cases at 11,723 instead of 9,259 (
https://covidtracking.com/data/).
