have you tried zero cal carbonated flavored waters? I crush almost a 12 pack a day

gotta throw la croix into the mix here. i start every day by waking up and chugging an ice cold pamplemousse.

the carbonation stings in such a loving way! i think my body even has a pavlovian response to the sound of a cracking can.

- We've done 108,000 tests so far (processed). This includes 45,000 done by CDC/public labs, and 63,000 done by private companies. This 108K number does not include some (more) testing done by hospitals (Feds working to try to get that data going forward)

- We did (processed) 20,000 tests yesterday

I assume then in the next 4-5 days the numbers will go WAY WAY up? I mean since they are finally testing at high volume?

Yep. Birx says to expect massive surge in positive cases in the next 2-3 days. And then it will likely stay high at least for awhile from the expanded ability to test.

I can't understand what's going on there. If they know they're in trouble why aren't they shutting down all non-essential movement, and gatherings? Mayor should be locking down, and if he won't governor needs to get on his ass and if he wont president needs to get on both their asses.

Cuomo is probably the only one of those 3 people who is competent in any way unfortunately.

I would agree though - they probably should be doing shelter in place.

What's crazy is that it's Thursday - 5-6 days ago DeBlasio was still going to keep schools open!

the numbers are terrifying. my mind shuts down when i try to envision how this plays out in real life, like contemplating infinity.

maybe, like infinity, these numbers too aren't really possible.

I can tell you that there are many places where this is not being taken seriously. I live in the Charlotte suburbs and had to go out today. It was basically business as usual at many, many places.

It's going to take stacks of bodies on TV before people really understand what is happening

Sigh. More new cases in the last 24 hours than we had total cases up until 3 days ago. Testing must be ramping up a bit. We will be at 50K (confirmed) cases in the next week or two.

It's possible, but I think NY has a couple of things that will help, the median age is 35 for the city, 37 for the state. And they plan to retrofit large buildings into hospitals, we have more than enough SUNY schools in NY that have empty dorm rooms to make it work.

i fear you are correct. and it may take the death of someone in their prime to get the youngs on board. 20-50 is not as safe as people wish to believe.

All hail the free market God for which he/she always fixes things they screwed up in the first place.

Why do people in this country treat the markets as it's some supernatural being that knows everything and solves everything?

Indoctrination, mostly.

Luckily the unprecedented nature of this emergency is helping a lot of politicians get their minds right, just witness the Republicans (of all people!) coming around to the Yang plan of direct cash payments to keep citizens afloat. I honestly don't even care that this shift is only spurred by naked self-interest ('Don't blame me, I gave you some money!'), I just hope they actually help their citizens when they desperately need the boost.

Corporations have never been shy about lining up to ask the government for free money or loans with ridiculously low interest no normal consumer could ever access. Ideally they prefer to privatize the gains and socialize the losses.

Yang's plan was in response to a level of automation that was years away and would have been costing the country billions if not trillions in the mean time. Currently they're trying to keep the economy afloat. Bit different.

I don't know if you'd have it in the states but in Australia we have these tea bags designed to be used in cold water. You just toss one into a water bottle and it adds a little bit of flavour, makes water less boring.

That helped me, among some other things, to lose 30kgs about 9 months ago.

i also wouldn't underestimate the pride and collective spirit of new yorkers. they have risen to the challenge in the past and i think are better suited for the stomach punch than the western cities i've been living in for the last 15 years that lack identity.

like the kerouac crowd of generations past, we are all just tramps here. (tramps in the former sense of aimless wanderers; who cares where the train is going as long as it is going kind of thing)

It's a combination of more testing and exponential growth.

It's a (not so fun) math lesson for everyone

We are now outpacing Italy in total confirmed cases if you match up both countries' timelines to when they had 157 (Italy) and 158 (USA) cases. Increased testing here no doubt is playing a role as lack of available tests previously held down the USA numbers (data is from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries)

For reference, the nationwide lockdown in Italy started on 3/9. Fatality numbers are a lot different, as USA population is 5x of Italy (so more cases before our medical care system is over capacity.)

Image

EDIT- since I made the chart, more recent info from all of today's testing now has total confirmed USA cases at 11,723 instead of 9,259 (https://covidtracking.com/data/).

I grew up in the LA/OC grouphome system from 5-17 years old. Despite tons of my own abuse of all kinds, neglect etc... he made my childhood not seem so bad. He literally endured a living hell most of his life around the clock. TERRIBLY tragic and sad. It was gut wrenching as you said.
