Can someone explain to me why the President has not acted on this earlier? Cause I can't figure it out, maybe it's not that simple, IDK.

Yes really.
It's insane they haven't moved to allow remote voting yet. I believe a bunch of reps (Porter and others) have already been screaming about it.

That's nearly every area. You have to have a whole list of symptoms, not just some.Mister Ze wrote:The concept of people being asymptomatic is quite scary. I feel fine but I guess I might have the virus and in my area they’re only testing people if you tell them you have symptoms

The answer is IMO pretty obvious... but I'm going to save it for the CA forum

The President has taken the approach of working with corporations behind the scenes instead of by force under these various Acts. Probably will be same result. Can't retro fit existing manufacturing that quickly. I expect ventilators will solved soon as they have actually done this before.
Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

Isn't that part of the problem? You can't be negotiating how and each company is going to make a profit, which is what I assume is going on behind the scenes, you would be wasting precious time while people die. They are too chummy with their corporate donors, sometimes it's that simple.ItsDanger wrote:Zenzibar wrote:

Actually the real problem is that this wasn't put into motion weeks ago. Thousands of people are going to die that didn't need to. It's already too late to prevent it.
This also isn't just a problem you can "solve". It's going to be an ongoing problem for quite some time.
The current situation is insane. The CDC and FEMA should be coordinating the distribution of supplies and equipment based on need to the hardest hit areas. Instead we have states fighting with each other over supplies..... It's almost certain that resources are going to end up much less efficiently distributed and again - more people will die.

Trump said as of now companies are stepping up voluntarily so he hasn't yet used the DPA to force them to do anything.
And yes it's not that simple. Why do people think a piece of legislation can fix everything?
The factories have to adjust and do something they weren't previously doing. They are doing it but it can't be done instantaneously.
A lot of this stuff we were probably buying from China and those supply chains may be closed as well.

Lots of profit will be made regardless. Might be easier this way working with them instead of ordering them around. Result might be the same in the end.

From Bing. Current data.
https://www.bing.com/covid
Italy mortality rate = 5,476/59,138 = 9.26%
USA mortality rate = 396/38,221 === 1.04%
USA deaths will start to surge soon (mortality rate goes up) because of the lag between catching the illness and those who die rapidly after catching it. So it's going to get significantly worse (especially the raw death total), in both raw death toll and mortality rate (although more mass testing will keep the mortality rate down, and possibly even falling).
Still, we want to stay as far away from that Italy number as possible. There is talk, however, that Italy may be using a death count method that could inflate the number:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/have-many-coronavirus-patients-died-italy/
This could end up causing a wide variance of mortality rates and death counts from nation to nation. If a nation counts deaths from cases who only had the virus (no pre-morbid conditions), then you're likely to see low numbers. But if a nation does the opposite (as Italy seems to be doing), then you're likely to see high numbers.

But Prof Ricciardi added that Italy’s death rate may also appear high because of how doctors record fatalities.
“The way in which we code deaths in our country is very generous in the sense that all the people who die in hospitals with the coronavirus are deemed to be dying of the coronavirus.
“On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 per cent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 per cent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity - many had two or three,” he says.

It's shouldn't even be voluntary this is an emergency which is what the act was created for. Precious time has been and still being wasted.

It's a difficult situation - part of the issue in Italy is that more people are dying from all kinds of things because hospital capacity is gone. I think to the average person it really doesn't matter anyways - basically this thing is really bad and can cause the overall death rate to spike a lot. Hospitals are more dangerous now as well..... go in after a car accident and catch COVID-19 while you are there.

I like how all the people talking about how it's not worth shutting down the economy because this only kills a somewhat small percentage of the population just assume they aren't part of that percentage.
Guessing there's going to be a quite a few people who undergo huge changes in their outlook on life while hooked to a ventilator soon.
