Dortmund and Schalke are playing right now. That's 22 players on the field, plus subs, plus coaches, refs, training staff, etc. and no fans. Curious how this shakes out for them, but maybe gives hope of a season again.

Players are already locked down with "loved ones". Yes they all have nice digs. But they can bring whoever they are currently isolated with to Vegas or Orlando or wherever and stay in a luxurious suite for a couple of months. And for most players it would be far less time.
What the incentive to a team that is already lottery bound to play a week or two of games?
getting paid
so 40% of the teams are going to show up and half-ass their play to just collect a check? I can't see the bottom ten teams putting in any effort whatsoever for two weeks of free money.

It'll be just like the end of every other season then.

Sam Amick did a story in the Athletic (paywall) on re-opening the season. Here are the highlights.
Said source told him league loses $900 million in TV revenue if no playoffs
NBA has no problem with obtaining Covid-19 test they need, but optics still bad
Factors in favor of a Vegas site: Hotels along with Thomas and Mack Center and Cox Pavillion along with new T-Mobile arena. The NBA has run summer league here. Everyone knows the logistics for hoops works
Factors for Orlando: NBA and Disney/ESPN/ABC partnership. Hotels abound and it is all private property, which keeps it much easier to keep the bubble.
League talking about cutting training camp time down from five weeks to two or three.
Family members can join, but must abide by regulations
Non-playoff teams not thrilled, but Silver telling them the whole family needs to return to action (if they resume)
All NBA players who have had Covid so far have quickly recovered, no hospitalizations
Unsure on what to do what coaches in at-risk age like D'Antoni, Pop, even Doc Rivers at 58 a bit concerned

Are there any actual basketball facilities at Disney? Or would they have to play at the Amway center?
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

I think Vegas is a better place for them, I think they need it more than Disney and have a larger capacity which allows them to more easily keep distance. Teams have to practice and multiple venues allows them to disinfect a one place without delaying it at another. The idea you have to keep players and their families prisoner I think is overkill, what did the UFC do? The Strip is basically shut down so I don’t think it needs to be somewhere totally contained.

Vegas/the strip will be reopening by the end of May. Not every property and limited capacity but there will be people on the strip and inside the hotels/casinos. Teams be able to reserve whole floors and there are a ton of huge suites and villas. As PP said you have T-Mobile and Thomas and Mack for games. I agree, I think Vegas is the more likely venue.

I’m going against Vegas for three reasons.
Health: Disney can be self contained for the players and their families. Vegas is, well, Vegas.
Money: Disney/ESPN/ABC. Need I say more.
Facilities: They’ve got two contained good arenas. More at link. https://www.espnwwos.com/complex-new-arena/

Different situations though. Corona is pretty much under control in Germany and yet the restrictions to make these games happen are pretty silly. Heiko Herrlich (coach of FC Augsburg) wasn't allowed to sit on the coaching bench because he bought toothpaste with a mask on (and was tested negative afterwards).

There will not be a finish to this season. Highly recommend the PBS app. Great documentaries.

You keep repeating this. Do you have some insider info here or is this just bluster?

Insider bluster. I genuinely want to minimize the hurt for my Bucks brothers when the decision is ultimately announced.

Still can’t tell if you’re trolling or not...everything we’ve heard in the last week indicates they’re going to give it a shot. Ownership and the players are unified and there is tremendous financial incentive for both sides. And sports are already coming back in Europe as we speak. Given they are willing to push this back until August/September/October if necessary I can’t imagine they don’t go for it.

Ugh, this would be the worst because Toronto fans would claim they were the first two-year champions in NBA history. And you guys know they'd do it.

There was "tremendous financial incentive" not to shut the season down in the first place while everything else was up and running at the time and they still did it.

Plus we all saw The Last Dance episode about Space Jam and the special court that was built to fulfill Jordan’s request. If Disney wants to do this they should have no problem building giant temporary structures for teams to play in if need be. I think the bubble of Disney wins out over the craziness of Vegas.

Yup I think the ultimate decision will be based on necessity/pull. I can't imagine Vegas stays closed much longer and would be hard to create a bubble. Both Florida and Nevada seem to be pro-open businesses but hopefully ESPN/Disney values the TV contract from the playoffs enough to give into the nba.Ill-yasova wrote:paulpressey25 wrote:MickeyDavis wrote:Vegas/the strip will be reopening by the end of May. You don't have to be an insider to know PBS carries great documentaries. While I generally have issues with the work of Ken Burns, you cannot discount the craft. The Country Music series was great. Is it because it was supremely well-done or due to my cultivated crush on Rhiannon Giddens resulting from her recurring role in the series? Real GM forum participant, that's up to you to decide.
Don't get me started on my editorial divergence on the Jazz series. I have Opinions and I will subject you to Them.

Quite a bit has changed since then, no?
1. We didn’t really know what we were dealing with. Everyone was scared.
2. We didn’t have capacity for mass testing like we have/will have now.
3. We flattened the curve and hospitals getting overrun is no longer a serious danger.
And whereas before the optics were against playing, I think the opposite is going to be true in a month. The working class will be working and exposing themselves and their families to the virus, either because employers require them to or more likely because they need the money. How would it look if million dollar athletes—given a far less risky environment due to repeated testing, a “bubble” self quarantine, and easy access to high quality medical care—don’t play because of the perceived risk?
As for the financial incentive, there is a huge difference between pausing the season for three months and cancelling it outright. And if you cancel this season, what exactly is going to change before December that will prevent cancelling the next season? A vaccine could be years away, if it comes at all.
