Yeah we're not having baseball this year. Of all the major sports I'm the most pesimistic MLB plays this year. They seem the most likely to fight about money and never reach an agreement.

The owners are the dickheads in this one, obviously. Like they always are.

No player worth anything is signing for $20,000. That's like college senior roster filler type bonus money.

Not every player has an option of going back to school. I wonder if they can put them on a AAA (or ML) contract, fake some injury, and have them "rehab" in rookie ball.

The only ones who can't are college seniors. High school kids can go to junior college or a 4 year college. College eligible sophomores and juniors can go back. There is no reason for any decent prospect who goes undrafted to sign for at most $20,000.

Pretty sure that not everyone can qualify to be at a school that gives scholarships to baseball players.

Korea and Japan should probably consider adding an additional international spot or two and picking up some of these fringe prospects.

I'd be shocked if the players accept this.

Meanwhile the A's are gonna stop paying all of a $400 weekly stipend to their minor leaguers.

I have a feeling minor league baseball will never look the same going forward. They were already talking about scaling it back before the pandemic and I think we could see this result in a MAJOR shrinking of the minors to something like only a couple affiliates per club.

They suck but I have to tip my cap for the gamesmanship of this proposal as a way to potentially split the union and get the lower paid guys pitted against the stars. It's a dirty but potentially effective tactic.

Baseball needed a financial reset, salaries and franchise values were both skyrocketing. Unfortunately it looks they're going to get one.

There’s an article on ESPN saying that not only did the owners reject the proposal, but they’re not even going to counter.

It's always hard to get the true story in baseball since the books aren't open. I read that if they do a half season (82) games the players will get 50% of their pay but that revenue will decrease 90%. On the surface that isn't right but who knows the real story.

I think a lot of the posturing on both sides is because the CBA expires after the 2021 season and the players don't want anything that happens this season to set a precedent for the next CBA.

I always figured if there was one sport that would screw things up it would be baseball.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Theoretically, I don't disagree with the notion that if revenue is going to decline dramatically, it is fair for the owners to ask the players to share in that pain (to a certain extent), but you sure as hell aren't going to get me to take ANOTHER paycut without showing me the books.

Nothing is absolute in situations like this but I definitely put more blame on the owners.

Even if they manage to get a deal done and return they've still **** this up. They could have got going quickly and been the only major 4 sport on TV and really drove interest for a sport that could really use it. Plus they've had like 6 straight weeks of bad PR with this whole money fight. Just a bad bad deal for us that actually like baseball.
