The more tape I watch the more I think he's a 2 in the NBA. You need to run the transition OR PNR at an elite level in the NBA to be a primary ball handler, there's just no real way around this.
So if he's a slow-footed 2 guard where does that place him? Shaun Livingston type of player? Klay Thompson? Old Joe Johnson? Lonzo Ball??
I believe a preinjured Livingston is a perfect example. Which would be great. Haliburton is a better defender though.

I don't see pre-injury Livingston at all. He was explosive and got to the rim/attacked. Better handle, but couldnt shoot from outside. Most of his buckets came in the paint or mid range.
Haliburton is a much better shooter/off the ball player.
They both are really good passers with great feel.

The reason I wouldn't mind Haliburton is because I can see he, Frank and RJ becoming a dynamic defending Trio with a guy like Mitch behind them. Add in Jerami Grant and you got something cooking on the defensive side. I think Thibs would be a great coach for such a defensive oriented team.

What's LaMelo's comp for the LaMelo haters?
So far, the LaMelo fan club has: Kidd, Penny
Kidd is a stretch, but guys like Kidd and Rondo show there is a place for creative, break down the D, excellent passing PG's who don't shoot that well. Obviously he's not like both, Kidd was a lot stronger and there are concerns if LaMelo can get into the paint in the NBA like he does in the Aussie league, I suppose.
What are the hater comps? Mardy Collins? Diamante Diamond? Injured and old Shaun Livingston?

My fan club comp is Luka, if he can figure out his jumper. The ball handling, passing, and bad defense are there already but the scoring isn't. For the haters, I've seen someone call him tall Brandon Jennings, which I kinda like.

Tall Brandon Jennings. Ok. I could buy that. If in the context of not believing his play will translate.
I still want LaMelo as the top PG pick for the Knicks, even though as a Frank fan, an assumption would be I'd be for Haliburton. Who winds up being my #2 choice.

Re: 2019-2020 College/Draft thread (Part 5)
Haliburton plays more like late career Kidd on ball and has potential to play like late career Livingston off ball. That shouldn’t be a diss because both players were key parts of championship teams.
His ceiling isn’t as high as LaMelo’s but I think he would have a good career and fit next to RJ in the back court.
Honestly I feel like we’ve discussed the top picks so much I rather talk about the second 1st rounder

Re: 2019-2020 College/Draft thread (Part 5)
Ball without question is the best passer in the draft. In fact he may become the best passer in the NBA the minute he steps on the court in an NBA jersey. In terms of the ability to read and see the play (at 6'7") he's absolutely elite already. Combine that with his ability to make every single pass in the book from 0 to 94 feet (he's been doing that since he was 14) and it's special. The warts are what you have to worry about and hope that the bulk of it will be taken care of as he matures. As stated, his team defense is not as bad as folks are being lead to believe and he's already showing that he's making adjustments to his shooting form (took Lonzo a couple seasons to do that). He's going to mature physically as well so his kinda slim frame likely will get much stronger (see Lonzo). So what whichever team drafts him may be looking at in a couple years is an elite passing physically mature 6'7" point guard that can cause havoc for opposing defenses and that can at least be adequate defensively (remember a lot of the top dogs in the NBA are not particularly strong defenders...those that are are your top 3 or so players in the NBA).

Avg nba wingspan not elite. Guys like mitchell, harden, wade have wingspans that excede their height by 4+ inches.

Not gonna lie, I don’t really have anything else to say that I haven’t said already about these prospects and we’re not even close to the draft. Hopefully some work out videos start leaking out now that lockdowns are starting the lift. We need something to spice up the fighting.
I know RJ Hampton has a lot of workout footage, but I don’t think anyone cares about him

Re: 2019-2020 College/Draft thread (Part 5)
Here is my thing with LaMelo...... it’s Zion all over again.
We all know he is really talented and likely the #1 pick. , but why discuss him endlessly when we don’t even know where we will pick in the draft? Knicks have him as the best PG in the draft..... ok they should because it’s clear to everyone he is the best PG in the draft.
We were all Gaga over Zion, he went #1. Even with the worst record we got pick #3 and drafted RJ, end of story. We’re #6 now so we have even less chance to get LaMelo than we had to get Zion.
Let’s focus on who the hell the Knicks need to get at #6 to make sure we don’t pull another Jordan Hill.

There's a few differences here tho.
1- It's weird draft in the sense that some teams would rather not have LaMelo with the "baggage" and the distraction. Also some of the teams potentially ahead of us arent looking at pg's (Hawks, Wolves, Warriors etc)
2- We have the assets necessary to move up a few slots. 7 1st over the next 4 years, frank, knox, mitch, RJ (Included the last two but they off limits for me lol)
3- Melo/Lavar gonna try and force his way to NY, wont work out for other teams, like Zion did.
You're still right and we should be doing our best to scout all the talent in the top 10. But I do feel like Melo's coming one way or another
