Is Vince Carter a top 10 SG of all-time?

Post#1 » by TheBomb81 » Thu Jun 25, 2020 8:33 pm

Do you think he is a top 10 SG of all-time or he would have been a top 10 SG if he had a better career and achieved more? Where do you rank him among SG's of all-time?

was he better than George Gervin? Reggie? Manu? Tmac? Clyde? When it's all said and done maybe even Klay? IF you think he is then yes I would said top 10.

Off the top of my head i would say no. I am sure we can split hairs on position but here are some guys i would have ahead of him:

Jordan
Kobe
Wade
West
Drexler
Iverson
Harden
Miller
Gervin
Allen

Then there are a whole bunch of guys I would have to think about more

no. i never think of carter as anything but a dunker who has had a long career. don't know his stats or how many times he's been an all pro which i THINK is zero. which means there's always been 3 +/- players ahead of him every year for 21 years, which is 21 of the 60 years of nba ball since 1960, so you have 40 more years from which to draw other top sg's.

you don't even have to think of how many sg's. just the pure math of this would be enough to say "okay, there's probably lots ahead of him who i can't think of".

his career hilites consists of 8 allstar games and numerous youtube hilites, so he doesn't even have a sustained all star appearance considering it's 8 of 20

Incredible longevity.
Very good but not great peak. Not much team success.

Not top 10. Even if you don't consider Iverson (partly PG), West (mostly PG) or McGrady (partly SF) like real SG, I don't think that he is.

Jordan
Kobe, Wade, Harden
Drexler, Miller, Allen, Gervin, Ginobli

Then MAYBE Carter, but Klay should surpass him anyway. And then again, Sam Jones, Earl Monroe or Joe Dumars are maybe/probably ahead of him too.

I would personally count Iverson and McGrady but not West, so anything in between 13-16 for Carter makes some sense.

1. Jordan
2. Kobe
3. Wade
4. West
5. Harden
6. T-Mac
7. Iverson
8. Drexler
9. Gervin
10. R. Allen
11. R. Miller
12. Ginobili
13. Carter

Not for me. He's just outside the top 12. Klay could realistically pass him as well with a long enough prime.

He is clearly better than Klay who isn't remotely in this discussion. Is klay even close to Michael Redd?

Please define SG please. Once you do that we can discuss. As I'm not even sure he was an "SG".

In the first ten seasons in the league he was posting up all of fame stats, after that he became a role player, he was still posting up solid numbers, I think he is in the top 10 but I was never the big fan of his game.

Once you remove the point guards you don't have 10 guys.

if he was an sf he'd be even further down the list.

sg is his best chance

As much as I love watching his highlights, I'd say no. He turned himself into a really good role player in his mid-30s, but as a superstar, he definitely underachieved.

I know he is more popular, but was he even a better SG than Mitch Richmond?

Define SF?

The guy has full season(s) listed at 3 different "positions".

look he’s not top 10 all time SG

but he is top 10 all time in terms of impact to the game. he is the catalyst for Canadian ballers today.

Borderline. I have him ahead of McGrady and Miller, and I personally count Iverson as a Point Guard. Manu is always arguable as long as role and total production are factors.

Is he?

MJ
Kareem
Wilt
Bird
Magic
Kobe
Shaq
Hakeem
AI
LeBron

Thats 10 guys right there I think all had a bigger impact on the game. Thats not even really bringing up any of the guys that had huge impacts for European players.

Well I can't claim he was a better "SG" but he was a better player imo by a pretty wide margin.

Mitch was a 2 time 20 PER guy, 4 time BPM over 2 guy (2 isn't even allstar level), and lets not even talk about WS/48. Mitch was an above average but not massively above average scorer who got an ok amount of assists, and he didn't not play defense...but he wasn't any good.

Career VORP
29.3 vs 57.9

Career WS
79.3 vs 125.3

PER
17.6 vs 18.6

Vince was better as a ball handler, passer, turned it over less, and was a better shot creator. That said Mitch was the better/more efficient just raw scorer. Defensively I've always graded vince as average to a slight plus. Mitch was always imo a slightly negative defender but not a bad one.

And if longevity matters, vince played 600 or so more games.
