Article: Does Coby have All Star potential?

IMO - nope, but hope springs eternal.

The comparisons are a stretch, but the one point I can find comfort on was
Talk to anyone in the Bulls’ locker room about White and one thing becomes clear: He works.

Nope. Unless his game outside scoring vastly improves. Hard for a player with his skillset to get there. Ceiling would be a Ben Gordon on steroids.

A lot of forgettable players are one time allstars. He definitely has that kind of potential.
Can he make multiple? Leaning towards no as well, but wouldn't be surprised if he did.

Too Early to tell. He had some really bad games, and also really great games and he's only 20. No one can be definitive one way or another just yet.

We'll see what he does next season though. I think that's when we'll have a more clear picture.

I agree with Tom Haberstroh's sentiment - except I personally did expect starter Coby to play the way he did (week prior to COVID shutdown). I think he needed burn and trial at the true PG position (which Boylen finally started giving him in February, as a reserve), but the way he played as a starter was exactly what I envisioned. He's got quick feet and his handles are glue. Not a crafty or effective scorer at the rim, but that can be improved, and it did seem like it was much worse when he attacked without a plan (earlier in the season). He's definitely not a Westbrook or Rose type who can manufacture a lay-up against a crowd, but his shooting form and step-back are very good.

He's got skill-set to hang with Kemba and Lowry. He's got much better defensive potential than Trae. Those are your East all-star PGs. After a golden era with Curry, Paul, Westbrook, young Deron and Rose, Lillard, Kyrie... there just aren't as many young PGs to look forward to besides one-way Trae, Fox and Morant (both in West). Fultz and Lonzo were supposed to take the torch but they busted. The position is wide-open in the East.

Absolutely. Looks a potential 20+ ppg/6 assists guy with high efficiency if his 3 point shooting stays around 40 percent. He is not traditional PG, but traditional PGs don't win championships so that's irrelevant. The only in the last 20 years was probably Rondo distributing to 3 first ballot HOF players.

I agree.

I could see Coby making a few AS games in the future, when he's around the 25-28 yr old range but not right now.

Is it possible? Sure. In the sense that it's possible for any quasi-good player to have all-star potential if they make massive improvements to their game. Clearly the can score in bunches, on his good days he looks like James Harden. If somehow he could turn most of his days into good days then he could be a perennial all-star.

The thing is that's extremely unlikely. You could have said the same of Jannero Pargo. The difference of course is that White has a better overall package of size/athleticism and is 19 years old so we still have hope, but he has to make massive strides that few players do.

It's a possibility, but how much more likely than any of the other 1st rounders that are his age from his draft? Probably not a whole lot more likely for him than the next guy who's also a long shot.

Mo Williams, D'Angelo Russel, Chris Gatling, Tyrone Hill, Anthony Mason, Kyle Korver, B.J. Armstrong, Dale Davis and Jamaal Magloire have made all-star teams in the East, so sure, Coby could make it.

It's possible, we simply have too small of a sample size to truly determine anything right now.

Looking at recent all star games, I see plenty of marginal all stars. I think Coby can absolutely match this level and make the roster:

2020: Domantas Sabonis, Donavan Mitchell, Devin Booker
2019: D'Angelo Russell, Nikola Vucevic, Khris Middleton
    2018: Goran Dragic
2017: DeMar DeRozan, Paul Millsap, Gordon Hayward
    2016: Andre Drummond, Al Horford
    2015: Jeff Teague, Kyle Korver

outside chance, sure. he'd probably have to improve his defense given that coaches choose the reserves (jamal crawford and lou williams haven't made all-star teams despite each being 3x sixth man of the year). most common player comp is jamal murray. others that look reasonable are brandon knight, arenas and mccollum. only arenas made all-star teams, but mccollum probably would have by now if he played in the east
the donald, always unpopular, did worse in EVERY state in 2020. and by a greater margin in red states! 50 independently-run elections, none of them rigged

No. Not right now. He's a ball hog. In the future? Don't know. Learn how to run an offense first and win some games. Then we'll see.

Absolute no. The only case 0.001% he can make is if his mentor comes back to the Bulls and teaches him to become DAR.

I don't care as much if he actually makes the All Star Team, as much as I want him to become a top quartile starting PG. That would be huge. If he can be a 20+ppg 6st guy who shoots 38%+ from 3 and plays decent defense - that would be awesome!
