(and it's not Chauncey or Tay)

David Mincberg. Milwaukee Bucks' "vp of basketball strategy." Has ties to Stefanski through Memphis.

Sounds like additional hires will be made, so Tayshaun may still be in consideration.

I like Mincberg’s background. He played important roles for two different organizations during strong runs for both.

Says he was director of scouting at Memphis for his 5 years prior to joining the Bucks in 2017.

When I finish work I'll be checking the Draft history of Memphis during his time there.

The Stefanski connection makes me nervous. This may imply Ed is still calling the shots, not Weaver.

He was with the Grizzlies during the “Grit and Grind” era and with the Bucks with Budenholzer and Horst. Strong periods for both franchises.

Never had great draft position to play with, but still, no hits.

2012, R1, 25. Tony Wroten. (Draymond Green, Khris Middleton, Jae Crowder, Tomas Satoransky went after. All R2)

2013, R2, 41. Jamaal Franklin.
2013, R2, 60. Janis Timma.

2014, R1, 22. Jordan Adams. (Rodney Hood, Clint Capela, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Shabazz Napier, Spencer Dinwiddie went after.)

2015, R1, 25. Jarell Martin.

2016, R1, 17. Wade Baldwin. (pick before Ellenson)
2016, R2, 57. Wang Zhelin.

This was made quite clear at the press conference. For the near future, Ed is still in charge of basketball operations. Weaver will run the draft, but reports to Ed.

Weaver should still be able to hire his own people that report to him.

I have to believe both Ed and Troy are on board with this hire. It might just be the Ed connection helped with intel and comfort level.

the president of basketball operations (or whatever similar title) does call the shots, the general manager just sees their orders through.

kind of like a retail store manager managing the day-to-day operations but still taking orders laid out by the corporate strategy.

Cant really give him blame for misses or praise for wins. Goes up many other chains before the decision is made

Yep. Ed still has the Van Gundy role in our front office.

Weaver is the Jeff Bower.

It appears it’s not quite like that though, as Assistant GMs who worked under Ed prior to Weaver are leaving and new people are being brought in, likely with Weaver’s input.

The Ed connection may not be significant. The NBA circle is not a large community- it’s one where there are connections all over the place. Someone who’s been around as long and in as many places as Ed likely has connections that can be cited with a significant portion of the league.

The Free Press article refers to Weaver and Mincberg as having a longstanding relationship that convinced him decide to join the Pistons. I expect that's true, as Stefanski will likely be gone in a year or two.

I see Stefanski becoming more of a liaison to ownership. Someone that understands the game, serving as a buffer for Weaver while helping Gores learn and make better decisions going forward. A level headed knowledgeable counterpoint to Gores' impulsiveness, making Weaver's job easier. He's earned Gores' trust and another basketball guy in the room when Weaver wants to pull the trigger on deals might help keep the rebuild on track.
