It won't surprise me if OSU loses some scholarship players as well.

I wonder how that conversation went between Hubbard and Gundy?

There was a gun pointed at Hubbard off camera (probably).

I'd bet the AD and others had separate (and self-serving) conversations with both guys telling them "don't f*ck up your future earnings, so kiss and make up". The University has probably put a brick outhouse worth of pressure on both guys, as OSU stands to lose a ton of money now and down the road.

*edit* There's definitely a "follow the money" touch to the second act of this drama.

Hubbard will be off to the NFL after this season and he needs to consider his draft position and its associated contract. He has to perform on the field, but also be seen as "coachable". As an RB, he needs to make some cash on his first contract, so getting drafted higher is a must.

Gundy is on the hot seat, regardless of what anyone thinks of his political views. He's got to win now. If he either loses current players or struggles to recruit as a result of this flap, I think he's in trouble. The fans and big money donors are not forgiving down there.

Still don't think Gundy is going to make out of it this time. I don't think his fake, "I just learned this yesterday" apology is going to smooth anything over. And, you know, he seems to mess up about once per year.

Though, maybe that's more reason to believe he survives it again

The state flag of Mississippi has survived 150 years despite being an overtly racist symbol. I think Gundy probably gets a raise at the end of the year.

I'm cynical enough where I think he's standing on the metaphorical trap door in the floor. I'd bet many of the big donors may share Gundy's views, but if it looks like he's on shaky ground with the existing team, and/or his recruiting falters, the door opens and he's gone. If he wins and the recruits flock in, he's got the job forever. The calculation will be cold and practical.

That's a big number. I'm all for pro leagues giving it a shot because you're dealing with pros who are choosing risk to try to get paid. College sports are a whole other discussion though.

Morehouse in Atlanta shut down the fall sports a few days ago. Football and cross country parked. More houses to be predictably closed in the near future.

Not sure if you guys are hearing the rumors. Supposedly teams like Clemson and OSU are intentionally infecting their team with Covid now so they don't get it later.

Problem is, this is not that type of disease. If this is true, it would be one of the biggest scandals since the Black Sox.

lol I sincerely doubt it, I've heard heard rumors of college kids having "herd immunity parties" but no proof of it and this seems like an extension of it. Its like an urban legend I think.

Wow, if the college football season happens, the Big Ten is reportedly only going to play conference games. So no Wisconsin and Notre Dame at Lambeau.

They're trying to stave off what I think is the inevitable - there will be no college football this fall.

Stanford cut 11 varsity sports today. I mean, their athletics program was massive and is still well sized as-is, but still.

ETA: All scholarships and coaching contracts are being honored, BTW.

Yeah, I'm 50/50 on this. I think even if things were better under control that it might have been not a certainty a season happened. Actually, probably more like a 25% chance they play.

Even though the risk to most players themselves is probably very low, it's still hard to have them take that on risk when they are not technically paid. Especially if the unlikely, yet possible happens and one player dies. Also, they'd be putting their parents/family at risk if they saw them.

And some schools may not be on campus, different schools/conferences will be doing different things...much tougher to pull this all off than a pro league.

All of that said, yes, there is risk of an outbreak within a team even with a lot of testing. However, I will say, even if the teams can at least wash their hands of the liability if there is no season, I think the majority of players given what we've seen recently will probably be at just as much risk without football. Seems like the youths are gonna party regardless.

Wow. Minnesota's Rashod Bateman is opting out of the season to prepare for the draft. Was going to be a likely first rounder.

Move totally makes sense for him and for the world. The earth is healing as Minnesota's hype for the "big year" they'd been hoping for in a hodge podge season if we have it is going to crumble before Fleck bolts at some point.

"He said [the racial slur] trying to ask the players not to use it anymore," Boschini wrote. "He has since apologized for doing so in this manner and said it was a teachable moment for him and many others."

Oh for ****'s sake.
