Quick question: Which teams still have room or other exceptions, in particular Milwaukee,
the two LA teams and Houston? I'm asking because reports indicate that Kyle Korver, who
I believe is worth more than a vets' minimum contract, have mentioned Philly, Milwaukee
and LA (Lakers) as possible destination points.

Hey Smitty, how is luxury tax calculated? What's a good rule of thumb of how much higher it is than the salary cap?

Let's say there is a $100 Million salary cap after this pandemic, what would that project the approximate luxury tax?

Here's how it is calcuated (from the FAQ):

The tax level is determined prior to the season, and is computed by taking 53.51% of projected BRI (see question number 12), subtracting projected benefits, and dividing by the number of teams in the league1. The tax level may be adjusted from there, based on what happened during the previous season:

If the league didn't pay the players enough the previous season, i.e., if they had to cut the players a supplemental check to make their guarantee, then the shortfall, divided by the number of teams in the league1, is added to the tax level. For example, if the players are paid $90 million less in 2017-18 than they are guaranteed, then the 2018-19 tax level is adjusted upward by $3 million.
If there is an overage -- i.e., if the players were paid more (pre-escrow) than their guaranteed share in the previous season -- and the system is getting close to exceeding what the league can get back through the escrow system, then the tax level (and salary cap) may be reduced in order to put on the brakes (see question number 17 for more information).

Last I heard its projected to be 109. If it drops to 100, a lot of teams will be hurting and I could see the NBA trying to setup a forgiveness plan for the luxury line. Trying is the keyword. 9 out of 32 teams over the luxury line is unprecedented.

Assuming luxury 120M luxury tax line, according my projections in bold, its almost impossible for about 13 or 14 teams to get rid of some luxury tax. And others 10 might choose to pay some to keep talent.

1. Philadelphia $147,170,412 (11P) 151M (added 3 M of rookie signing and 1M of salary holder)

2. Golden State $145,603,990 (11P) 156M (added 8,5 millions from the top rookie signing And 1,5 Damion Lee team option)

3. Brooklyn $133,706,318 (11P) 151M (added 3M from rookie signing, 2M for Nwaba guaranteed deal and estimated 13M for UFA Joe Harris new contract). 156M if they pick 2M Pinson and 5M Temple TO. Easy fix: If they give up Joe, they drop payroll to 138M, still high.

4. Houston $131,331,546 (10P) 134M (added 3 M from Minimun salary holds).

5. Milwaukee $130,777,415 (12P) 137M (added 3M from rookie signing and 3M from Pat Connaugton re-signing with Early Birds). They can save 9M waiving Ersan and Bender non guaranteed deals to a 129M payroll.

6. Indiana $125,318,718 (12P) 131M. (added 6M from UFA Holiday Cap Hold, although he may make more in another team). Fix: If they gave up Justin, payroll stays at 125M.

7. Boston $123,318,957 (9P) 150M (add 10M Tatum T0, 7 million from the 3 rookie signings, 2M from Time lord Team Option, 5M from Theis to secure non guaranteed deal and 2,5 from Wanamaker re-signing with Early Birds). Waiving 3M in Semi and Javonte Deals.

8. Orlando $121,164,255 (10P) 129M (added 3M from rooking signing plus 3.5M from Okeke signing and 1M in 1 Place holders after waiving Melvin)

9. LA Lakers $119,559,440 (11P) 124M (aded 2M from the rookie and they will try to bring back Howard using 2M Cap Hold). Howard might demand the MLE to re-sign.

10. Utah $117,071,459 (12P) 131M (added 10M from Jordan Clarkson UFA re-signing using his Cap Hold, 2M from rookie signing and 2M from Mud Non Bird re-signing although he could demand the MLE). Easy fix: Give up Clarkson, Mud.

11 San Antonio $116,715,729 (11P) 129M (added 8M from Poetl re-signing, 4M from rookie signing). Easy fix: Waiving 5M non guaranteed Lyles deal and 17M non guaranteed part from Aldridge deal.

12. LA Clippers $114,044,403 (10P) 145M (added 30M from Harrel and Morris re-signing and 1M from a salary hoster charge). Easy fix: give up Harrel and Morris.

13. Portland $110,941,475 (10P) 132M (added 3,5M from rookie signing, 15M to re-sign Whiteside with his Cap Hold and 2M to re-signing Melo). Perhaps Melo (no Birds) demands the MLE, increasing the payroll to 135M. Easy fix: give up Whiteside and/or Ariza non guaranteed 11M.

14. Cleveland $108,947,185 (10P) 120M (added around 9M from the Top Rookie signing and 2M from 2 salary holders). They may re-sign Zizic with his birds, adding 4M+ to the team payroll (to 124M).

15. Dallas $107,472,741 (11P) 120M (added 3M from the rookie signing and 2M Brunson TO). They definitely will be using the MLE to grab another player.

16. Chicago $106,027,708 (12P) 114M (added around 7,5M from rookie signing). They may try to re-sign Dunn and Valentine to around 12m (both) increasing payroll to around 126M.

17. Denver $105,894,872 (6P) 121M (add 3M to Monte and Diop TO, add 7,5M+ from a more expensive Grant Deal and 2.5M from the rookie signing and 3M from 2 salary holders). If luxury were not a problem they might try to re-sign UFA Milsap and UFA Mile, RFA Craig and RFA Bol Bol increasing the payroll to 150M.

18. Oklahoma City $103,825,488 (10P) 125M (added 2M from Diallo re-signing, 2M from rookie signing and 15M from UFA Galo re-signing using his cap hold and 3M to re-sign Noel using Early Bird). Although I think Noel could demand the MLE or sign with a different team. Easy fix: give up Galo and Noel.

19. Washington $103,004,970 (11P) 126M (added 17M from UFA Bertans re-signing with Birds Right and 6M from rookie signing). Easy fix: give up Bertans

20. Memphis $102,639,017 (9p) ) 121M (added 10M from JJJ and Grayson Allen TO, 5M from UFA Josh Jackson and 2,5 Melton RFA re-signing). Easy fix: Give up Josh Jackson.

21 Sacramento $98,484,324 (9P) 122M (added 20M from Bogdan re-signing and 4M from rookie signing, 2M from 2 salary holds). They can try to re-sign Baze using his Cap Hold for around 7M too, leaving with a 131M payroll Easy fix: waiving non guaranteed Bjelica (7M).

22. Minnesota (11p) $94,407,457 130M (added around 17M for Malik and around 7M for Juan re-signing plus 12M from 2 rookie signings).

23. Toronto $85,078,279 (8p) 142M (added 2M from Davis TO, around 3M from Boucher (RFA) with Early Birds and Ibaka and Gasol re-signing for around 15M each and UFA Fred re-signing for around 20M and 2M from rookie signing). Easy fix: give up re=signing at least 2 or at least one from Ibaka/Gasol/Fred.

24. Phoenix $84,902,242 (9P) 107M (added 7M for Diallo and Kaminsky TO, around 10M for Saric re-signing and around 5M from rookie signing). They could try to re-sign UFA Baynes with his Birds for around 13M, increasing payroll to 120M. They could give up Diallo/Frank/Daric to sign a FA.

25. New Orleans $83,000,988 (9P) 127M (added 29M from Ingram re-signing and around 15M from Favor re-signing 3,5M form rookie signing, subtracted 7M from waiving non guaranteed Miller, signing Kenrich to a 2,5M deal using Early Birds and adding 1M from 1 salary holders). Easy fix: give up Favors.

26. Knicks $82,847,203 (8p) 74M (subtracted 22,5M from the non guaranteed part of Taj, Payton and Wayne who must be waived and added 10M from 2 rookie signings, 2m From 2 salary holders, and 5M from Dotson re=siging, increasing payroll to 77M while using his Birds for Cap Space effect payroll would be 74m).

27. Miami $80,165,620 (7p) 114M (added 3M from Nunn and Duncan TO, added 2M rookie signing and around 18M from Crowder and Dragic re-signing. Plus re-signing Derrck Jones to a contract around 7M using his birds who conts only 1,5M against cap). They may give up Crowder and Dragic to pursue FA agents, keeping cap space in 91M). They will use their Cap Room to bring someone.

28. Charlotte $79,303,714 (9p) 89M (added 2M from Demonte TO, 7M from Rookie signing plus 2m from 2 roster charges).

29. Detroit $67,059,580 (6p) 96M (added 3M from Brunce and Svi TO, 15M from Wood UFA re-signing. 8M from rookie signing and 3m from 3 salary holders).

30. Atlanta $58,202,336 (8p) 74M (added 4,5M from Skal re-signing and 8.5 from Top rookie signing, plus 3M from 3 salary holders). They may give up Skal to pursue FA agents.
