Which has more value, A 2020 #1 pick, Or A 2021 top 10 pick in the 7-14 range. And why?

Post#1 » by Ghost of Kleine » Sun Sep 6, 2020 10:24 pm

It has been discussed on the trade board that the belief is that A 2020 #1 pick has more overall trade value than a package of a 2021 top 6 protected lottery pick/ The 10th overall pick in the 2020 draft/ And Kelly Oubre.

I disagree, On the premise of this draft having no truly discernible clear cut star at the top! And that the value of a prospect at the 10th pick ( in this particular shallow draft) is petty much equivalent to the what you might get even at one. Lastly, I have the 2021 draft projected as having much higher end talent and being much deeper too. So within that premise, Is it a fair argument that a 2021 Top 6 protected lottery pick, should have at least equal value to ( if not more than ) the # 1 pick in this 2020 draft, When taking the overall level of talent into consideration, And when comparing the talent levels and depth in both the 2020 and 2021 draft?

I'd take the number 1 if I need a star and the trade package if I'm building around a star.

Wiseman and Ball have franchise player upside that is realistic to see imo

the next draft is always projected as going to be better in trade talks even though 21 looks to be a lot better it probably wont be after the top 6

2021 easily

I can get

Mobley
Clarke
Garuba
Barnes

#7-11 in 21... cheaper, better long term, then damn near everyone in 20’... 20’ blows donkey c*ck and that’s with 0 reclassification from 22’ class. 20’ draft is a dumpster fire

There might be 15 players in 2021 I would rather have than anyone in 2020. *edit* (So it was 12 off the top of my head)

1. Cade Cunningham
2. Jalen Green
3. Jonathan Kuminga
4. Evan Mobley
5. B.J. Boston
6. Ziaire Williams
7. Jalen Johnson
8. Roko Prkacin
9. Usman Garuba
10. Terrence Clarke
11. Jaden Springer
12. Jalen Suggs

This does not even factor into the salary of the #1 pick vs a lower pick.

You can with same logic claim that a 2020 pick in range 7 - 14 has more value that a 2020 #1 pick
The problem of this draft is that all players which are estimated to have high upside of 2nd option on contender team or better are also perceived to be very high level risk prospects: Edwards is not effective and not high BBIQ, LaMelo is extremely ineffective and not well coached, Wiseman played in total one of serious level games in his life, Obi can't play defense and Deni is a Euro which "can't shoot".
But if you want player in range 7 - 14 - just go and select player in range 7 - 14 : Haliburton or Vassel for example are solid players which would go in this range in more or less any draft

If I had the #1 pick in this draft, I would trade back into the 4 - 6 range and draft Okongwu or Okoro. I think those 2 guys are comparable to picks in the 7-10 range of 2021. By trading back, I would pick up another asset, hence making the #1 pick this year a more valuable asset.

The 2021 pick is a more valuable trade asset. Teams toss around future picks like they're bags of candy corn (unobjectively the worst candy). Even knowing the windfall that appears to be coming in 2021, a team would still trade their pick for next year if they could get someone that would help them win now.

Until half of them flake out in college or show their warts. 2021 is surely a better draft, but there are only like 3-5 players sure fire better than #1 this year. 12 is just comical.

Alot of phenom types in the top ten of 2021. I see Antman going in the lower quarter in the that top ten range. You also have to take into account the current college and intl prospects that have a meteoric rise as well.

I'd consider #7 in next year's draft, but beyond that, I don't feel comfortable saying I would or wouldn't because LaMelo/Wiseman could easily demolish them as a prospect...

Depends on the range. 7-10, next year for sure, 11-14, I'd prefer the first pick.

I think he means guys who could all potentially go in the top 10? Just worded it poorly.

+1 for speaking truth about candy corn

I've thought about this a lot since GS has the Minnesota pick...I still think the MIN 2021 holds more value than the Warriors' 2020 #2 overall, but that feels like a minority opinion on the trade board.

Id rather have two mid picks that the 2020 1st pick. The rest is just gravy. This draft has some really questionable prospects at the top. Wiseman could be good but could also be an Ayton/Whitside type player.
Edwards looks like he has no awareness/ game understanding. His shot is weak and his defense is bad. He could be another of those failed slashing guards in the NBA.
Ball is a joke.

I like 1-10 next year but after that, there is a steep drop at this time. Let's see who emerges and regress.

2021
too much uncertainty with this year's class imo.
