He is like Charles Barkely in that he has the highest compliment you can have in basketball even over GOAT

A fat guy who plays like the wind.

Id rather have that on my tombstone over GOAT

got covid and lost a bunch of weight, but it's not like he wasn't just as good if not better last year. But yeah maybe he lost his sense of smell and taste!

According to the Nuggets and Jokic he lost 4-5 pounds.

He's always been a wonder to me in the sense that Denver plays at altitude and a guy that chubby should be winded after 5 minutes but it doesn't seem to affect him. Now that he's not even that chubby anymore I think we can officially stop worrying about his conditioning. He's a freak.

People think that big muscles and a 6 pack mean you are in shape, go to just about any blue collar jobsite, those guys are usually the guys sucking wind halfway through their shift. I have watched every game Jokic has ever played and cannot remember a single game where he asked to come out. Last night several of his opponenets did.

Can anyone name an instance where he seemed to perform badly because of conditioning, even before recent weight loss? I can't. As noted above, I watched him play 65 minutes against Portland last year. He was tired, but no more so than Lillard and a number of other physical specimens.

At this point probably, he's just naturally more pudgy than other players.

Jokic reminds me of some of the chubby MMA heavyweights who look out of shape but actually had elite cardio in their primes (Cain Velasquez, Fedor Emelianenko, Josh Barnett, Daniel Cormier, etc)

If your intent is to be big, carrying extra fat vs extra muscle is better for cardio as the fat doesn't demand the oxygen that muscle does

I think he looks fitter than I've ever seen him. Squint a little bit and he almost looks like an NBA player!

Not for the first month or so of this season. He was visibly heavier and it showed with his sloppy play on the floor and weaker production. He was still able to play well enough for the nuggets to win, but it wasn't up to his standards. He quickly turned it around tho and put together another excellent regular season.

As a general comment for his career, yeah it isn't accurate. He showed the ability to play major minutes in the playoffs last year (and this year obviously). Anyone pointing to that 4OT game against portland wasn't playing close enough attention. Everyone aside from somehow CJ was winded too.

My eyeballs don't agree with the 30 pound stuff, but I'm not buying that 4-5 pounds and I've got better than average eyes on weight loss. But not really worth a fight.

Imagine what he could do if he got himself into better shape...

I thought this was put to the bed the moment they came back for the bubble games. The dude is the best shape of his NBA career right now. Playing arguably the best basketball on both sides of the floor in the playoffs:

25.4pts, 10.8reb, 6ast, 0.7stl, 0.9blk on 51.5%FG and 44%3pt with 19FGA (6 3pa) in 37.7mpg.

I mean at 37.7mpg he is 15th in the playoffs and was only behind Gobert's 38.6mpg for all centers.

After last game, Jokic has played over 1084 playoff minutes in TWO seasons. Last season he played 40 minutes per game in the playoffs, even playing 65 minutes in a quadruple overtime game and this season he's averaging 37 minutes per game.

Obviously Jokic takes defensive possessions off and doesn't give full effort on that end of the court, but he touches the ball almost every single possession on offense, runs the fast break as the ball handler, bangs in the post, grabs rebounds, etc.

The reason I bring this up is because I read this:

Jokic played 40 minutes that game, and 40 minutes each of the previous two games and has played in back to back 7 game series. Is he secretly in elite shape, despite his outward appearance?

I guess COVID-19 did it all, solved every weight problem Joker ever had...

not necessarily, people built differently... Joker needs his flex tummy and arms to do things he does, gaining muscle might stiff things up for him... he needs swimmers' type of muscle, he used to play water polo which did him good, and soccer too etc..

I wouldn't get him to change his entire body or anything but I do think he could stand to lose a bit of fat.

On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with how he's playing right now, so why change?

Nope, Jokic lost weight during the hiatus, while he was in the US. He got COVID later on while visiting Serbia, and was asymptomatic afaik, only found out about it when he had to test in order to return to the US.
