Today's Stars final resting place

Post#1 » by pipfan » Thu Sep 17, 2020 6:13 am

I have the All Time players ranked into tiers-like many of you. Here is how I have it (this is not for arguing past stars, just today's)

1-GOAT Tier MJ, LBJ, KAJ
2-Legend Tier Duncan, Shaq, Russell, Wilt, Hakeem, Magic, Bird
3-All Time Greats Kobe, West, Oscar, Dirk, Malone, Malone, Barkley, DRob, Wade
4-Hall of Famers Pippen, Ewing, Baylor, Stockton
5-Others worth remembering

Again, the past stars' placement is not the discussion here. These lists are not complete, of course. Where will these players end up

KD (for me, tier 3)
Curry-3
Harden-4
Westbrook-5
Giannis-3
Joker-4
Leonard-4
Davis-4
Embiid-5 or 4
Paul-3 or 4
Melo-4
PGeorge-5
Butler-5
Lillard-4

Where for you?

I don't think these tiers are really useful. T1-4 are all very close and in some cases interchangeable, with T5 being everyone else.

This post has a lot of holes in it.

Where is Julius Erving, Kevin Garnett, Steve Nash, Bob Pettit and John Havlicek if guys like Pippen and Stockton are "Tier 4"?

What is your argument for Pippen and Stockton being an entire "tier" ahead of the guys I mentioned?

Forget the question of the thread, what is your process for your own tiers? How can we possibly put these players into tiers made by you without knowing everything there is to know about why you made the tiers in the first place?

Jordan, I was clear in the OP that the former stars's lists are not complete-just to give an idea. This is about today's stars, and where they might end up.

I think Curry, KD or Giannis could MAYBE squeak into tier 2. I have Kobe as #11, the 1st player in tier 3. But, they have work to do

A handful of these guys don't belong 1-5. Lilliard being 4 is silly.

I don't think it's silly. Group 4 includes Stockton.

Stockton made 11 All-NBA teams, two of them 1st team. He finished in the top 10 in MVP shares 5 times, with his highest finish being 7th place.

Lillard has made 5 All-NBA teams, with one of them 1st team. He finished in the top 10 in MVP shares 3 times and will probably do so again this year. Assuming Lillard has 3 more elite seasons and two more slightly below that, and he'll finish with 8-10 All-NBA teams, probably at least 2 being 1st team. And he'll be top 10 in MVP shares are least 6 times. I think that's comparable.

I think you pretty much nailed it. The difference between Tier 3 and Tier 4 is mostly whether or not you win a few titles or not. If Jokic wins a few titles, he is Tier 3. Kawhi could make Tier 3 too, but probably not with his injury concerns.

Giannis may only reach tier 4 if he doesn't win any titles.

How in the world does Giannis go at 3 while Harden is at 4?

Because it's "final" resting place, not "current" resting place. People are making assumptions about future play.

Harden looks like he probably will never win a title, and it's hard to make Group 3 with no titles. Giannis is young enough and good enough that there's a good chance he wins a title, or at least competes in a Finals on multiple occasions. If he is a league MVP caliber player for 4 or 5 years and wins a title once or twice, that puts him in Tier 3. Don't you think?

Westbrook is a 1000% lock for the HOF, completely disrespectful to have him 5th tier, dude is an MVP & 9x All-NBA

And barring a catastrophic injury Kawhi is definitely going to end up tier 3

remember, Tier 3 is more or less top 20. That is some elite company for Leonard to get to
