The Bulls had a melt down after they lost to the Blazers in the Western Finals.

Afterward they were racked with injuries and lost some players to free agency, and were never the same.

Eventually they just decided to trade Gilmore while his value was still high.

Gilmore was traded to Spurs in 84, the year MJ was drafted.
And the return was not that good (Dave Corzine).

Actually he was traded in 82 after the season.

Sorry, my mistake. Nevertheless, the return was not good.
But, if we never trade him, we maybe never suck enough to get the 3rd pick in the 84 draft.

Even more incredible/fateful was that the Bulls could have drafted Clyde Drexler the year before they drafted MJ.

The passed on him and Portland grabbed him.

Drexler was so crazy good that the next year when the Blazers could have drafted MJ, they passed on him and the Bulls grabbed him.

But no one thought that MJ could be better than Drexler.

Drexler said after he was drafted that his natural position was really small forward. So him and Jordan could have played together.

drexler was the #14 pick and jordan was the #3 pick. drexler was not even a full-time starter until his 4th season. MJ was almost immediately one of the top 5 players in the league...maybe by his 3rd game:

keep your eyes out for craig hodges and paul "i've got 6 fouls to give, coach" mokeski coming off the bench for the bucks
the donald, always unpopular, did worse in EVERY state in 2020. and by a greater margin in red states! 50 independently-run elections, none of them rigged

Ugly Duckling wrote:This thread started out about the best all-time Bulls lineup and how it'd rank with others, but it's pretty clear the Lakers and even some other teams have better all-time lineups. So why not talk about the best Bulls prior to MJ? Love, Gilmore, Walker, Sloan, etc.? I'd love to learn some Bulls history

Prior to MJ?

Artis Gilmore
Bob Love
Chet Walker
Jerry Sloan
Reggie Theus

Honorable Mention: Orlando Woolridge, Norm Van Lier, David Greenwood, Sidney Green, Quintin Dailey, Mickey Johnson

Return to Chicago Bulls
