DHo looks like he deserves a good chunk if not the entire MLE, if he's instrumental in winning a chip, i'd bring him back. I mean, he hasnt played poorly lately, and his attitude change has made him a MASSIVE impact 20 min a game player. The AD + DHo lineups is a freaking terror for other teams. DEN litearlly got blasted as Jokic cant defend either.
With Rondo, the absolute most i'd give him is the Bi-Annual Exception of around 3.8mil a year, its hard to justify to give him near MLE money cuz his track record the past few years isnt as good as DHo's been. If he helps the team win a chip, yea, bring him back.
I'd rather want to bring Kieff back too, his versatility isnt as great as his twin, but he can hit 3s and play smallball 4 just fine. Will be hard to keep if DHo gets a good chunk of the MLE and Rondo gets the BAE, it might come down to choosing 2 of 3 of the aforementioned players, due to not enough exceptions and them wanting more than the vet min.
Think bringing in a 3rd string PG would be important, if the team ends up playing up a size and moving KCP to SG, and LBJ needs a blow from not constantly playmaking. I like Lin for the vet min for 3rd string combo guard role, get him to PnR with the backup bigs and, setting up offenses, getting his teammates the ball.
C - McGee, DHo, Boogie
PF- AD, Kuz, Kieff
SF- LBJ, THT, late FRP
SG- Green, Caruso, Cook
PG- KCP, Rondo, Lin
McGee is, i feel, is useless with the way DHo having arisen. Boogie could be useful if he's ever healthy. AD can slide to the 5 and Kuz/Kieff can slide down to the 3 as needed to balance out mins and roles. I hope THT gets a bigger role next year, i think his long ass arms and athleticism can let him play at SF as needed. Sniper in Green, defensive stopper in training in Caruso. KCP floats 1-3 depending on whatever the team needs on the floor. Rondo hopefully isnt useless in the regular season but still has playoff mode ready to be activated. Lin is the old vet who can do a bit of everything, playmake, hustle, and fill in if anyone ahead of his gets hurts or falters at the 1/2 spots. Cook is only a shooter, not sure if he's worth a roster spot if the team needs more versatility out of its player, but they still have him for 1 more year or they can waive him for a 1mil cap hit.
The only question that comes down is this.... are the Lakers hellbent on opening a 2021 max slot, if they are, that means they cant give multi year deals to DHo, Rondo, and Kieff. At best all they can offer is 1+1 team option, so as to preserve 2021 cap space. McGee, Green, Caruso, Cook, and KCP are all expiring, the old vets in Boogie and Lin are 1 year flier types and wont affect anything long term.
Is it worth giving up 2021 cap space to keep DHo, Kieff, and Rondo. Of the 3, i like DHo the most and Rondo the least. It would be an insane coup to retain them all for 1+1 team option deals, but clearly all three of these vets would want more job security than to risk a 1 year deal at this stage of their careers.
Agreed agreed agreed, except Dwight over Boogie. To clarify, I don't think either's a gold digger.. both great dudes.
I'm not a fan of Dwight. I think he's just one of the many role players who look better than they are around Lebron, cos they're winning in the spotlight. None of them are deemed any good before or after they are parted from Lebron. e.g. Mario Chalmers, Mike Miller, Shane Battier, TT, JR, Delly, Mozgov, Jeff Green, etc.
I realize that Dwight has excellent defensive technique and strength, which, combined with AD & Bron's roving rim protection, is a huge bonus for all perimeter defenders enabling them to go ultra aggressive or execute a particular game plan for a player without fear. That is indeed huge, and there are maybe 10 players in the NBA who can do that now. But that's where it ends.
-He has no offensive capability
-His extreme indiscipline often halts our runs / puts us in the penalty way too early(he was averaging a foul every 2 minutes in the first 4 games against the Blazers and isn't playable against legit small ball teams like Rockets or Clippers)
-His rebounding is not elite anymore for a big man whose only job is to sit inside the paint.
-Clogs up the paint for Bron, AD and other driver / cutters.
This generation of big men is obsolete in the NBA. Better bigs with the same skillset and lesser weaknesses - Drummond, Whiteside basically have to shut up and opt in for their extensions in unwanted destinations, cos they knew it was their last payday. Expect them to be bouncing around for 5-8 mil as their contracts end. Dwight, with his many flaws, is worth far less.
Boogie @ 70% fitness, where he can give us 25 minutes a game is way better than either of Dwight & McGee. His defense is probably about 70-80% of Dwight, considering -
-no body fouls as much
-Lebron's influence should help keep his temper in check
-elite rebounder
On offense, Boogie is only second to Jokic and Embiid.
-Legit post game
-Can play make in Lebron's absence. There's a wild unguardable big to big p'n'r that AD and him kinda created which specially makes me salivate.
-Rondo, AD & Boogie's chemistry is off the charts
-Elite passer from the post
-3 point shooting
-Opens up the paint for drives and cuts
Dwight has made enough money being an idiot through his career, and I would prefer having him over McGee as our second Center after Boogie(except McGee's signed up for a 2 year contract), but I'm not sweating if the moron leaves again. Good luck to him finding another job.
