What years do you think that he should have won?
I don't think Lebron should have won any of the last 6 years. The year Durant won it, the Heat had the 6th best record in the league and sleep walked through the regular season. I think the only one you could argue is the year Rose won it. Lebron wasn't going to win the award based on the backlash of the not 5...not 6 comments. But the Bulls did win 62 games that year and finished with a better record than the Heat did.
The Bulls also had a very good team around Rose.
Look at it this way: this is LeBron's 17th year. Does it pass the smell test that he's only been the most valuable player for 4 of those, considering how many of those years he was clearly the best player? There are always worthy alternatives, but come on. Harden, Westbrook, Durant: these guys have never been more valuable than LeBron. There are years when he's been like 4th in the voting. It's absurd.
Same thing happened with Jordan. In fact, that it happened with Jordan is probably a major factor here.
This goes back to the argument of, is the MVP an award for the best player or not? I like the way the MVP is currently awarded - it should go to the person who had the best regular season in a given year. It's a regular season award, it should not just be given to the best player.
Based on that criteria, I am completely ok with Lebron only having 4 MVP's. I think the only one that is debatable is the Rose one. But when you blindside a franchise by telling them on national TV you are signing with another team... and it makes people not want to vote for you... that's on you.
Should off the court stuff like the decision not count towards decision making? Maybe. Even if Durant would have been the best player in the league when he went to the Warriors - there is no way he should have been the MVP of the league. The MVP is more than just being the best basketball player in the league, rightfully so.
