The drama with looking at all those drafts is that we don't know who Weaver wanted to pick as he was a lesser voice in the room behind Presti, maybe others.

Now he's the one in the big chair we'll see which direction he goes.

I'm actually hoping he turns the Draft into his night!

With so many teams apparently looking to get out of their picks he might just be able to buy one, trade for another (or 2) and send a message that we are going to build this thing the right way instead of chasing the 7th and 8th seeds every year

Of course that is a factor, but it also goes both ways as well. If we are going to hit the brakes when evaluating the bad picks, we need to do the same with the good picks as well.

That being the case we can't trumpet Weaver for any of Williams/Milsap/Miles picks in Utah or the Westbrook/Harden/Ibaka picks in OKC.

In any event, Weaver has played a role in the Thunder not gettng any help/talent whatsoever in the last 7 consecutive drafts.

7 drafts in a row is SVG bad. SVG at least hit on quite a few trades.

Teams will want known qualities for the upcoming season. It will be rushed with almost no mini-camp. Vets that can be plug and play should be more valuable.

Hopefully D.Rose will get mid-late first on draft night. Later in the season if Griffin is not done he should be tradable. I think he will be even more a shell of what he was but if he can play any defense at all, he is interesting. Can shoot, pass, make the right play, bully guys some, handle the ball. Poor man's Jokic?

The problem with a BIG contract is that its almost impossible to find trade partners. If he was 25 million, that could be two guys making 12 million. 37 is insane and how can a team trade for that? Its dumb on so many levels that should have been obvious to anyone. Again, its very annoying being some random guy able to point all this out. Why cant I be paid 4 million a year to run a bottom tier NBA team? I seem to have a better handle on being the point guy for an NBA front office, just thinking while Im on the toilet.

I think Ball still goes to Chicago at the latest but stranger things have happened.

Drummond was widely looked at as a top 3 for months before the draft and a top 5 pick the few weeks before the draft and ended up falling to us at #9 largely because teams thought he lacked a motor / work ethic.

I don't think there's any clear top tier. Edwards and Wiseman are probably the favorites to go 1 and 2 but that's far from clear IMO.
The one thing that seems pretty clear is that Edwards won't drop out of the top 3. Other than that, it's a free for all partly due to limited sample size of scouting in real games. This draft was already questionable at the top before COVID but COVID threw a lot more complications into this draft.

Guys like Avidja and Toppin have gained a lot of steam as very high floor guys, wouldn't be surprised to see one of them taken in the top 3. It's a crapshoot really.

I’m starting to think that Haliburton might be one of those high floor guys that could be in play for the top 3 as well. Maybe GS shocks the world and takes him at 2, as he would fit seamlessly there (both on and off the court).

Yeah I agree. In a draft with so much uncertainty, I think teams will go for more certain/safe prospects at the top so Hailburton could be one of those guys taken earlier than projected. It's also why I can LaMelo take a tumble, just too many question marks around his game even though the upside is enticing, same with Hayes too IMO.

I have no idea what Weaver's mindset is, none of us do, but based on him emphasizing the need to bring in "good players, good people", I'd imagine that Haliburton is very high on his want list.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of drafting for "intangibles" this high up in the draft when you have one of the least talented rosters in the league so I'm not a huge fan of taking Haliburton at 7. I'd rather take a shot at the more boom/bust guys like Hampton, Williams or Lewis in a trade down preferably.

I'd say it's more like quite a few trades fell into his lap. He was immensely lucky in his first two seasons. Presti was forced to give up Jackson for peanuts after the latter destroyed his own trade value by publicly forcing his way out of OKC, McDonough bizarrely shipped out Morris and Bullock in a cap dump as part of a completely futile effort to sign LaMarcus Aldridge, and Hennigan gave away Harris for no defensible reason whatsoever. SVG made only three other notable trades; in one he was saved from paying Donatas Motiejunas only by a failed physical (he'd blow the reprieved first-round pick anyway), in another he was introduced to his short but unfortunate obsession with Avery Bradley, and the third requires no explanation.

Hopefully D.Rose will get mid-late first on draft night. Later in the season if Griffin is not done he should be tradable. There's no such thing as a poor man's Jokic. If Jokic were less good than he is, then his ball-dominance would be an issue. It's an issue for Griffin, who absolutely, positively must helm the offense and have the ball in his hands as much as possible. He can't return anywhere near solid value on his salary otherwise, and it doesn't befit any good team to hand him that privilege.

The problem with a BIG contract is that its almost impossible to find trade partners. If he was 25 million, that could be two guys making 12 million. 37 is insane and how can a team trade for that? Its dumb on so many levels that should have been obvious to anyone.

Yes, and that's an understated complication of moving him out of town. It would be extremely difficult for anyone to match salaries without giving up a good player in the bargain.

Again, its very annoying being some random guy able to point all this out. Why cant I be paid 4 million a year to run a bottom tier NBA team? I seem to have a better handle on being the point guy for an NBA front office, just thinking while Im on the toilet.

Poor owners choose bad executives. Sometimes those executives are the general managers, and sometimes they select the general managers.

Pistons are literally the last team that should draft another high end role player with a lottery pick. Haliburton doesn't even possess the offensive skillset to make him a top 3 option on any legitimate team. What good is an elite facilitator when the team around him is as talentless as you can get? & he might be the worst PNR pg thats in lotto projections and may have a hard time getting his own shot off compared to others due to his release. Hailburton makes sense for many teams in the lotto but Detroit is not one of them.

Please act like a modern NBA franchise and grab a guard that's looking to score and is a willing enough passer. This team desperately needs a floor general and someone with alpha dog traits.

Celtics and Orlando are both trying to move up in the draft.

Boston has #14, #26, and #30 they are trying to move up as high as they can in the lottery with this picks.

Orlando has #15 and perhaps a future first they are offering.

Will be interesting to see if we stand pat with who we like or if we get a deal too good to pass up to move down.

I think its hilarious that some media outlets (ringer and others) have hayes going 8 to NYK and their write ups constantly write about how Hayes is #1,2 on their board.

What makes them think Detroits not taking him then

Okoro, Lamelo, Cole are going to be the AllStars from this draft.

Hayes, Edwards, Wiseman, Williams, Okongwu, Terry, Riller will be quality starters eventually.

Vassell, Halliburton, Bane, Tillman, both Beys, Maxey, Paul Reed will be heavy contributors on good teams.

That’s just my opinion
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

I think you're mistaken in that Obi Toppin will go in the top 4.

Knicks perspective article on Cole Anthony for anyone interested. He’s certainly a polarizing prospect, but his AAU coach’s perspective on what drives him is really interesting. One thing that has to be acknowledged even by his detractors- he’s a fierce competitor:

And a Cole Anthony prospect report from Keith Langlois for whatever you think that’s worth:

Latest mock draft from The Ringer with a pick in the top 3 that would definitely shake things up:

Wouldn't be surprised at all if Cole Anthony turns into a legit pg. He accelerates like he's getting shot out of a cannon. At this point, the game is just too fast for him and he's playing out of control, but if it ever slows down for him, watch out.

I like Anthony too. I’m not sure whether he’ll become a star or not, but barring injury, I like his chances of at least having a good NBA career.
