Nets Going Forward: Planning for Next Season

Are we prepared for the awesomeness that just *might* unfold in the next week?

All summer and fall, I dutifully debated with you all on the prospect of adding guys like Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and Zach Lavine. Some of you were convinced that trading Spencer and Caris for any of them would immediately boost our contending hopes, and I staunchly disagreed. All of those guys are poor defenders, and they each want to be the shot-taker but are not as invested in being the play-maker.

All of a sudden, credible Harden rumors surface, and we're squeamish? The Bearded One is the scorer those 3 players above DREAM they could be, and he's become a far better defender and passer than any of them.

I'm a defense-first guy, always have been, always will be. I had my heart set on obtaining a true defensive anchor like Embiid, Gobert, George or (to a lesser degree) Holiday or Porter. Harden isn't that, but he's an upgrade defensively over any of the pieces it would take to get him. I would still be happy with any of them, EXCEPT that one of our rivals will end up with JH unless we get him. We can't allow him to go to Philly, Boston, Miami or somewhere else. And unlike those stars, we're actually in the pole position for James, an MVP candidate locked up for the next 3 years!

One final note: I predict that wherever James lands, we will find out that what we had called Harden-ball was really Morey-ball all along. I've seen articles recently saying that he doesn't need to play that way, and values winning over ball domination. I do think that he would still expect 18-20 shots per game, which means Kyrie would have to take a backseat and become the table-setter, something he's never adored. But I think all 3 would recognize the special opportunity that would come with combining forces, and this Brooklyn fan is SO HERE FOR IT! WHO'S WITH ME?

Similar to the Andre Iguodala situation with Memphis, they may just sit on him as an asset until a contender comes along with the requisite asking price. The Thunder are going to recoup assets coming and going on this deal, I can feel it.

He’s probably not the flashiest name, but if Avery Bradley opts out, we could really use a backup 2 guard that can play D, hit some shots, and maybe even run point for short stretches.

If we can’t get one of Justin Holiday, Ibaka, Gallo, Saric, Millsap, Crowder...etc. Is Avery Bradley the next best option?

Bradley is competent on both ends of the floor. He’s been around long enough where he knows every one in the league and all their strengths and weaknesses. He’s turning 30 this month, so the risk of him being washed by the time his contract is up is low. He’s just another high IQ vet who does a little of everything well.

Kyrie / LeVert / Harris / KD / DJ
Dinwiddie / Bradley / TLC / Prince / Allen

He’s nowhere the value of Igoudala with the Warriors who was a sixth man and best perimeter defender on the team.

Who is talking about gifting? I don't think giving up former #1 pick, a 24 year old all-star locked up on a 5 year deal is "gifting" anything, its possibly the best return you could get for a superstar.

I love you, brother, I strongly disagree with you here.

Danny Green excelled in most of his toughest defensive assignments all year, and was a knockdown shooter. A desperate Jamal Murray and Jimmy Butler torched him, but I won't write off the whole year. Andre could never shoot like Green, and is not really a better defender. They're both near elite, just in different ways. Iggy was darn near unplayable in this year's Finals, and had a diminished role with the Warriors last year because he's falling off.

Iguodala garnered a late future 1st on both ends, and I anticipate the same type of value return for DG.

In order for this to work money wise, LeVert, Dinwiddie, and Prince will have to be shipped. I can't fathom Houston not asking for Allen in a deal, so most likely:

LeVert, Dinwiddie, Prince, Allen, 2022 1st, 2024 1st

For

James Harden.

I have my concerns but if Woj is pushing this, the chances are high.

Nobody is beating that lineup. We will by far be the best team in the NBA. You guys are insane if you don't want it to happen.

You can just heavily stagger Kyrie/Harden. And Kyrie will have to become more pass first like he was with LeBron.

Having 3 elite scorers will not be a bad thing. We will slaughter teams.

Correct. Plus, Jarrett Allen went to Texas U. He would easily be a fit there. The question is, does Houston see Allen as an upgrade to Capela and will be okay extending him once he’s in Houston? I say Yes but it’s hard to tell.

Westbrook/Dinwiddie/LeVert/Covington/Allen + #19? is a very solid starting five for a team with no picks.

I just hope we can get some really good defenders for cheap. I'm sure there will be vets wanting to come here for a chance at a chip.

If I'm Harden I'm waiting to see what if anything happens with Westbrook. There were rumors about a Westbrook trade for PG13.

You can actually legally sneak Tucker in there by adding Claxton if my math is correct.
