The Heat, Pistons, and Knicks have cap space to sign him so we won’t get anything back unless they use their cap space for another player prior to the sign-and-trade.
Mavs: THJ + 18 + 31?
Pacers: Oladipo? or Turner?
Dan Hackett on raptorshq.com did a deep dive into an example S&T with Freddy.
https://www.raptorshq.com/2020/11/13/21563344/nba-free-agency-toronto-raptors-fred-vanvleet-sign-and-trade-optionsIt's hard because Fred's salary is going to at least double, making such a trade subject to the hard to fathom base year compensation (BYC) rule. Dan did work out a way to get both VO and Mykes from Pacers for Fred, Norm and the usual ballast. But the numbers are very tight.
My preference - Fred goes to the Mavs (out of the conference) for Delon and Dwight Powell. Their salaries combine to make $20 mill. But the math to make it work is hard, since Fred's outgoing salary for the Raps is only half his new salary (say $25 mill). So if the Raps are over the cap, they would have to add more outgoing salary to make up the difference. But I'm not sure if the Raps really are going to be over the cap (assuming we haven't used our cap space already on re-signing Serge/Marc/Boucher or a FA. Anyway, too complicated to plan this out. I'm content to see what happens. Bobby's the right guy to have here.
