Sam was a great get by UW. He will always be a Badger favorite of mine. But man, talk about a talented athlete whose development flatlined. Never showed great improvement as a shooter, ballhandler, or defender. Never had a pro position, either. A small forward who doesn’t defend or shoot?

DingleJerry wrote:HIs forgetting how to shoot was the killer. He regressed on this from his freshman year on and it kept going to the NBA. It's like he should just go back to his dad being his shooting coach rather than what everyone has done to him since. If he could hit mid to upper 30s from 3 he could've hung around, play some small ball 4 off the bench. His off ball movement and all that was good and he has enough athleticism to hang, but you just can't shoot 30% or lower from 3. Remember he did have one year for the rockets as a solid bench contributor. I think he's hitting 3s at a good % in the few games they've played so far this year but no way anyone can put much stock into that. If you could pay him the minimum for 2nd rd picks or UFA he wouldn't be the worst 13th guy off the bench(chances are he's better than a lot of other bad players in the NBA now, but he doesn't have upside whereas some of them still do), but I'd assume he would count as the veterans minimum so that's not really feasible. I don't know how 2 ways or G league would work for a guy like him but in spite of what he says I doubt he's taking 40K to play for Oshkosh on the hopes of some end of bench games for the Bucks.

We have a very solid starting 5, got rid dead weight (DJ) and Bledsoe.
At the moment our bench looks like:
We are left with an estimated 9-11M without going to luxury tax, or am I wrong ?
How possible is that our owners will go into luxury tax, at least for this year ? Is the extra tax amount really significant for wealthy owners or is it an amount that would easily be covered with a good season ?
I guess the Covid crisis makes it even more difficult, having the uncertainty of empty arenas for a short or longer period of time.

I got killed for this at the time, but I also thought he was overrated/overvalued at UW, too. 100% wanted him on the team and he was a great contributor to an incredible team, but people thought he was a messiah after his state championship shot and because he was a 5-star. But, I digress

For a 5 star, he did what he was supposed to do. He wasn't the star of the team, but it's fair to say he was the 2nd guy on a very accomplished team. That's nothing to shake ones head at.
Not every 5 star coming in is going to be an NBA guy. Dekker was. Probably still can be. On a side note: Brian Butch says hello.

There are so many bums at the ends of NBA benches. There is no reason why he shouldnt be given another shot. But you're right, sometimes EURO leagues are better suited for certain guys. Nothing wrong with that either.

But maybe we could have cap space?
Middleton is an unrestricted free agent in 2024 (he has a $40 million player option in 2023). Totally possible he signs an extension before then.
Jrue Holiday has a player option in 2021 ($26 million) and would be an unrestricted free agent 2022. He could do an extension as long as 4 years starting in February, but it doesn't necessarily have to be that long, especially if he's hoping for another big deal after this one.
If the plan is for Middleton and Holiday to be here for the long term, we could line up their contracts to expire at the same time, which could open up some amount of cap space.
We then resign Khris and Jrue with bird rights, perhaps with a little extra for them trusting the franchise to help us retool as we stare into the draft abyss.
We'll have picks; they just won't be good picks. There's pick swaps in there so theoretically we'll either end up keeping our pick in the 20s or losing our early picks and instead getting a pick in the 20s.

2020 has been a difficult year for all of us. If you need someone to talk to, many of us here are more than happy to help.
