I think he takes Cam's spot and makes him a super sub and 6MOTY candidate

That’s what I think as well. Lakers just showed that you can win with size in the league.

I think this kid will compliment Ayton well. Of course not immediately but in the long run.

Absolutely. If he can keep his range thats perfect as it allows Ayton to work inside while this kid hits the open 3 when he gets the chance. I like the pick. It'd be great of we could've traded down and gotten him but if no one wants to trade up then what ru gonna do? Gotta take your guy

Ayton/Smith combo will be a killer.

That is like 3 more dunks than Ayton had all season. He looks like a center for sure. Domin-Smith.

I think he'll be fine at the 5. Think of him as a shorter Myles Turner or maybe a defensively better version of Thomas Bryant. My only concern with young bigs is that they take time. Smith is pretty thin, and will need to bulk up before he can handle regular NBA minutes. I'm really not expecting much more than 15 mins from him this year.

I don't like the fact that we passed up on Haliburton and Vassell. Both guys would have contributed more straight off the bat.

If we're not using him at the 4 then this pick, a 10th pick as a strict backup of your #1 overall pick who is a borderline all star at the same position, is a tire fire of inexcusability. He has to be able to play the 4 for us at least a little. A backup 5 is easy to find in FA. Hell, re-sign Baynes and use the pick on the best dude (Vassell or Haliburton) then.

What is the knock on him such that he was projected around 20? seems as good as any other prospect, and perfect for us?

As Flex would say (though he didn't mention Jalen Smith and he's certainly not a guy that fell), it was fluid...rankings were pretty fluid. Seems like he was as high as 13 at one point.

The thing is, there is not much separation between like the top 20 picks...outside of a handful of guys. Jalen Smith is 15 on tankathon's big board and 17 on the ringers.

Mocks might have had him lower.

Based on this draft - mocks and rankings of the media don’t mean anything.

Yeah, after the top 3 it's been pretty much a crapshoot. Toppin to the Knicks was talked about and Okoro to Cleveland, but that's about it. I thought Okongwu made perfect sense for the Hawks though and told them on their board in their draft thread.

Good pick! Seems versatile with no stand out weakness? Shot blocking, 3 point shooting bigs are always nice. Guess between Ayton, Saric, Cam and Jalen the front court is sorted. Now we can focus the rest of our resources on the wings/guards backing up CP3, Book and Bridges

Been watching Jalen Smith videos as he was the clear player of need.

Hayes and Lamelo were the other two that I thought Suns could have used or needed pre Chris Paul trade.

I’m mad because I would have resigned Baynes and use this pick elsewhere, but oh well. Hope he’s ready to play 15-20 mins a night right away

AtheJ415 wrote:I watched a ton of Maryland this year. I like Smith, but not nearly this high. And before anybody says, "well Cam", yeah, Cam is a good player, but Brandon Clarke is still better and was sitting there at a position of more need. We had a boatload of guards sitting there at a position of need as dire as our PF spot, particularly if Saric is indeed being brought back.

Vassell and Haliburton were guys that would help this team more. Combo guards with playmaking ability who are not defensive liabilities are rare. Both do that.

Don't forget PJ Washington if we didn;t take Clarke. Both look a lot better than Cam considering age and performance this last season.

To be fair, Vassell and Haliburton would have been backups too. I felt our depth at 4/5 was the thinnest besides maybe the 2...which is why I would have taken Vassell or Haliburton, but I always really liked Smith...just wasn't sure if we'd go for a PF/C. He can play with Ayton...they both can switch....and hit the 3 like Cam and Bridges...maybe not at the same rate, but can hit it.
