Do we already have the nucleus of the next good Knicks team?

Post#1 » by TheDavinciCHODE » Sat Nov 21, 2020 5:34 am

By good I mean over 500 with a realistic path to home court advantage in the playoffs.

The nucleus of the team is as follow:

RJ
Frank
Knox
Obi
Mitch
DSJ
Quickley

Does anyone see an above 500 team here within in the next few season including realistic free agent additions?

Does anyone see an enticing trade package to acquire the next disgruntled super star?

I like some of these players, and I firmly believe Knox and Frank will become rotation level or above players in the right environment. Knox is too good of a shooter and has all the tools necessary to being a winning player, he just needs to put it together in a non-toxic S***show team like last year.

I honestly think our best case scenario is DSJ puts it together and becomes a high-level PNR point guard to pair with Mitch, with Obi hitting a high % of his 3s at the 4 while playing respectable defense. RJ could be a secondary or tertiary playmaker, and Frank will be the backup PG.

Not the rosiest outlook for sure.

Maybe it's better to frame the question this way: What's the plan here? What are we hoping for with these prospects?

dsj is a bust
knox is a bust
frank is a borderline rotation player. He's like the 5th guard on most teams over 500.

Mitch has marginally improved since his 2nd year
RJ should be able to develop into just under All Star production soon

we have nothing, tbh.

1 situational C that can't seem to figure out how to play 30mpg
1 really young guy who needs to improve his scoring and defense. but seems smart and committed.

We have our nucleus...it’s RJ/Obi.

Mitch still has a lot to prove and would be the more obvious trade piece for a star.

Glad to see so many people agree with me.

So why in the hell are we drafting players like Obi Toppin with a high floor but low ceiling and a 0% chance of contributing to winning basketball past the 1st round of the playoffs?

Seems as directionless as it could possibly get.

Cause at some point you need the players you draft to be decent and a higher level of success than the lottery to move forward..

mitch, obi, and barrett the only legit nucleus.

frank can be added to because front office likes him and i guess quickly since he's on a first round rookie contract.

so no, not really -- they need to a top tier talent in next years draft.

Talent and assets. Toppin was the best talent at 8 and he has the potential of being a significant asset...to keep and be part of the future or move to get a guy that you think can help be part of your future or better impact your team. They needed a top 3 pick. They didn't get it. At 8 Toppin was the best choice.

Too early to tell, but I would say there's more evidence for "no" than "yes." Obi and Quickley are unknown, but there are some things I like about them. RJ is a mixed bag -- I could see him being good, but I can also see him being a borderline bust. Mitch, still uncertain what ceiling if any he has. DSJr, Knox, and Frank are basically hopeless. So, yeah, considering that there's not one player I think is already good or likely to be good, that's not a great nucleus. But it's not all dark clouds either.

Hell NO!!! Nucleus??? More like trade bait for a star player or one with star potential to build around/true nucleus creation.

RJ needs to improve his shooting if he wants to take the next step.

Unlike most here, I don't view Mitch as a starting center. He still has a lot of work to do. I don't care how many shots he hit in practice. If he can't do it in the games, then he is still a bench player with good defense.

Obi has the most star potential on the team, especially if he continues to improve his shooting. However, the TRUTH about Obi will start to show in preseason basketball.

Knicks need the RIGHT all-star players. They can't tank forever with nothing to show for it. It's time to win NOW!!!
I'm not a fan of Westbrook because he is an average to below average shooter, but the Knicks need to find a way to get the right all stars on their team if they want to take the next step.

The rest of the players on your list are certified BUMS! I'll take rookie Quickley out of the pack FOR NOW!

I think having Obi as an offensive fulcrum will make the rebuild look more close to complete. But truthfully, we’re very far away. We need a playmaker

Lol.

We need a number 1 & 2 option, I.e a superstar and a high level all star. And it looks like it has to be in the backcourt.

Hopefully Cade and one of the sg’s with the DAL pick (if we get lucky).

I think we do “have it” in the Mitch, RJ, and Obi combo but they are not going to be good yet.

Nope. Mitch has to show he can stay out of foul trouble, RJ has to show he can consistently hit a jumper and we need a point guard who’s able to facilitate the offense, break down the defense and consistently hit an open jumper. I’m hoping the former happen this year, but the latter requires a free agency signing and /or trade.

No.

-Don't have a top flight PG
-Don't have a SF as a playmaking 3rd option
-Don't have a bench that we can ride off the starters

Get those straight then we can talk about having a nucleus.

Obi hasn't played a game in the NBA yet to say what kind of player he'll be. RJ has a lot of work to do but showed some hope but that was with a bad team where he was given the ball to do what he wanted with it. Mitch hasn't shown he can even be a full time center/player in this league yet and will need a good center to rotate with. There's nobody else on this team to talk about as a starting level player right now which means we have a shyt ton of work to do before we even think about being a .500 team.

Love the positivity though.
