If I were the Bulls and we really want Zach long term, I would consider extending him early.

I think there will be plenty of demand for Lavine around that number. It's less about Lavine being so super special and more about the economics of free agency, even for this kind of player (high scoring, low wins). The big knock on Lavine is that he hasn't won games. Bradley Beal has lost just as much as Lavine and signed for $36M per year.

If you're a team without stars and have to spend 90% of your cap anyway, I'd much rather throw $30M to a 24 year old 25 ppg self scorer than split that to get 2 Thad Young types, or 3 Felicio types.

Last year we split $21M to Thad + Sato, which got us basically nothing. If we just signed 1 guy for $21, we would have gotten Malcolm Brogdon. When spending in FA it's almost always better to spend as much as possible on one player, the return you get trying to be cheap is a bunch of guys who don't provide more than your average replacement level player. A lot of NBA GMs know this and would rather toss $30M to a Lavine/Beal than $15M to two nobodies.

Exactly correct.

If Lavine continues his scoring pace, he's going to get a huge contract as a UFA.

This is what I was thinking as well. If Hayward stays healthy, this at least makes the Hornets decent. The last thing you want is an environment where the team is horrible, Ball is unhappy, and his father starts going crazy in the media.

They overpaid, but only by a few million per year. That's worth the ability to develop Ball in a more competitive and stable situation.

I don't like the rest of their pieces though, with the exception of Graham. They desperately need a big who can stretch the floor. Perhaps John Collins? Ball, Hayward and Collins is probably pretty bad defensively, but offensively I like the fit.

He has had one freak injury. Not sure you can project that happening again.

He had a broken hand and an ankle injury last season too. It's nothing significant (yet) but I wouldn't bet on him being productive at age 34. Certainly wouldn't want to pay him 30 mil then (or now).

The Hornets are seriously stretching Batum's expiring deal to make this work. It just keeps getting worse.

Basically means the Hornets are paying 39 mil per year for the next 3 seasons to have Hayward on the team (30 for Hayward, 9 for Batum).

Crowder should have stayed with the Heats, but he's probably looking out for his retirement funds and long-term investments now. Avery Bradley on the Heats is a good replacement for him though.

Hayward, Graham, Ball, Washington is not a bad nucleus. If they can grab a legit rim protection C they’ll be much improved.

The Heat were never going to offer Crowder more than 1 year guaranteed, they want their 21 capspace. Easy decision to go to the Suns at that point IMO. He get's paid and still plays a significant role for a good team.

Love that deal for both sides.

The Hawks are looking pretty good too.

Trae / Huerter / Gallinari / Collins / Capela
Dunn / Reddish / Hunter / Okongwu

And they're still in negotiation with Bog and Rondo.

The East is gonna be improved across the board with non-playoffs teams like Atlanta and Charlotte getting better via FA while we seem to be mostly standing pat and banking on internal improvements.

Gallo is pretty clearly a 4 these days though + playing him, Trae and Collins together is a nightmare defensively. I kind of expect them to trade Collins (in a Bogdanovic SnT to Sac maybe?) at this point. Paying Collins big time money would be a mistake IMO and their moves indicate that they agree.

So they should have what? Held out for Giannis next year? Convince Kawhi that he is better on small market team?

Unless he magically finds a 3pt shot, he'll be strictly a 3rd string guy and a specialist for certain kinds of defensive possessions.
