2021 Cap Space-what do the Bulls do?
Obviously not much flexibility this season in terms of cap space for the Bulls, but next season is another story with a lot of contracts coming off the books. What will the Bulls REALISTICALLY do with all the cap space they have for next season? Who will they target? What’s your project roster/depth chart look like?

Trade for a disgruntled star.

Keeps tabs on Kawhi and the murky Clippers situation.

I wonder if any of these superstars who are disgruntled even want to come to Chicago. I guess we will see.

Kawhi, Giannis hell Anthony Davis could be on the move. 1 of them might not come here but 2 max level dudes might come here with a great supporting cast and good coach.

Re: 2021 Cap Space-what do the Bulls do?
You have 3 options
1. Try to land stars. If that fails:
2a. Try to absorb contracts for future picks. If that fails:
2b. Sign players to 1 year deals and try again in the 2022 offseason.
Never settle for mediocre free agents like Sato, Young, and Felicios.

The real question is what is "plan B". I won't be surprised if we strike out on big names. I just don't want to be Boozer'd again and sign a 2nd tier guy for first tier $$$.

Again, our capspace completely useless unless you use it for a trade. The only other use it has is to give people that hate us schadenfreude.

Save it for trades, small budget free agents, and for current players worth extending because big name stars probably aren't coming here (not saying it ain't worth a try).

Much of it is positioning and you've got to know who somebody's agent is and who do they have coming up as FAs.
The other part is if you look at Kawhi Leonard A Davis or whatever max guy, fill out the depth chart and and see if adding them turns the Bulls into a title contender. after answering the health issue for just about everybody
Williams does he develop quickly
Markkanen does he become who he looked like he could be
Carter Gafford both gain on providing offense
White looks like an NBA PG
Lavine scores when he needs to not because he feels like he should or because he's forced to
If everything works out that's a playoff team, so does a max star see joining that lineup to make the next step up. don't worry about the bench, one starter has to move back for the star and you've just got to fill in
so that when the max star looks at the lineup he sees where he's joining a young roster but with experience at every position, he's got help up and down the lineup that he can lead but doesn't have to carry the team on his back. That's why you don't strip down everything for draft picks and cap space so even if you were looking for 2 max contracts those guys wouldn't be looking at a bunch of sophomores and rookies that they need to count on

If a superstar cannot be attained with it, save it and use it to facilitate trades to get more assets.

Generally agree with this plan. You add the Sato/Young types when you are already at 40-45 wins and are trying to boost up to 50s, and hten maybe you trade for a star later with picks. So maybe if we end up with 40-45 wins because our guys are amazingly better than we expected this is an option, but if we're in the low 30s then your plan is the exact one to follow.

Well said. I agree on all points. I’m very curious to see how it all plays out!

Lowry and/or Mike Conley seem like the sorta 3rd tier FA's I'd expect the Bulls to be in play for.

Whatever it is, it better not be what Detroit is doing.

On a further note, I never understood why teams are forced to spend 90% of their cap space. If you don't spend it, it goes back to your current players on the current roster. If you have to choose to signing a player to a likely bad contract like the Knicks did in 2019 or not using your cap space at all, I go with not using your cap space at all. It's better to wait and hold onto your cap space preserving it than wasting it on mediocre players on longterm deals.

Totally agree with this. Also, don't sign/trade for former all-stars who are on the downhill of their careers, just to make the playoffs. I don't want to see us trade multiple assets for guys like Kemba/Conley/Love or something because we aren't in win now mode just yet. Unless of course a couple of our young dudes blow up and turn into all-stars.
I like the inclusion of the mid season tournament for us because it gives us a shot at making the playoffs while also getting a lotto pick in a supposedly strong draft.
