Looking at the market this year norm is opting out next year!!

Post#1 » by vulture » Sun Nov 22, 2020 4:30 pm

If norm has another year like he did this past year there is no way he doesn’t opt out.

So what are the options:

1) let him opt out and bring him back at a friendly deal

2) trade him and get something of value that doesn’t hinder our long term flexibility like a FRP

Thoughts?

Yeah, the core in the future will be Fred, OG, Siakam, our 2021 draft pick and a 2021 free agent. And maybe Lowry on a two year deal.

I don't see Norm being a part of that.

Only if he has a down year with major injuries does he opt in.
He’s worth more than 11 million right now

No one is taking a "friendly" deal to stay in Toronto.

Did Siakam take a friendly deal? Did Fred take a friendly deal?

Powell is going to opt-out and ask Toronto for the Joe Harris deal or he's gone.

Yep, no chance he doesnt test free agency next year. at worst some team will offer him the full MLE which is inline with what his salary would be anyways

I was all for trading Norm a couple weeks ago but were already so small at SG with not much experience. We can only trade Norm for another SG and honestly another SG is not what we need right now.

Powell will show why he's a max player if he's given the opportunity to next season. He is a 3 level scorer, his shot has improved a ton, I think he takes the next step and becomes a better passer as well next season, and NN usually gives contract year guys a bigger leash. Davis might also be on the way out for big man depth.

if Powell opts out, its because he has played like a great player. stop worrying about his contract. its a non factor.

If he opts in, he's essentially giving us a 5mil discount for a year, and becomes an extremely tradable asset. Unless his leg falls off in the next 12 months; there's really not much risk for us.

OP is right that if he plays like last year, he'll opt out. But last year was about as good a year as he's had, so it's no guarantee that he'll be as good or even all that close this year.

I hope you're kidding.

A max deal would be the same as Siakam (25% of the cap). So starting at nearly 30mil. And you aren't even figuring in OG's extension and possibly re-signing Lowry.

Assuming OG gets an extension in-line with what other players have got this year, he's getting anywhere between 18-20mil easily. I doubt Lowry is going to take much of a discount. So that's about 30mil there unless he plays like complete garbage.

Siakam (30mil), Fred (21mil), OG (20mil), Norm (30mil), Lowry (30mil). That's 131mil in contracts. Jesus.

Norm is a 3-level scorer and has shown consistent improvement. If you gave Norm as much usage as FVV do you think they would be a major difference in impact?

Norm can do everything FVV can. FVV isn't a good floor general or passer. If you gave Norm as much development opportunity as Fred he would have shown much more.

The biggest difference is Norm is 6'4 with a 7 foot wingspan and FVV is most likely not even 6 feet tall.

Norm will prove to be at the very least worth a Fred contract. That would be better value too. I can guarantee that most will think FVV is overpaid in less than a year.
